TKC MUST SEE!!! KCPD CHIEF TALKS KANSAS CITY HOMICIDE RATE!!!

Really important conversation and some EXCELLENT questions from a veteran newsman. This one is worth a look for the overnight and might possibly revisit for the morning if any of our blog community has something interesting to share . . . For now, check the conversation:

KCPD police chief talks about city's homicide rate, challenges for department

KMBC's Kris Ketz talked exclusively with Kansas City Police Chief Rick Smith about the city's homicide rate and challenges for the department.

  1. This chief is doing better than the last one but that might not be enough to make a difference. That's a very low bar to surpass.

  2. So what's the plan? I don't see any suggestions or solutions here.

  4. A good start would be:
Hire more cops and have increased 24/7 coverage in high-crime areas, particularly East Patrol.
Stop funding all the fake, completely ineffective, and unaccountable nonprofits and grifters and use the money for the above and other police activities.
Stop making believe that the violence and homicides are "everybody's problem" and put the cause squarely where it belongs, on the irresponsibility and destructive behavior of a small percentage of a minority population.
Get elected and appointed officials to stop spending their time being jerked around by east side revs and others on projects like renaming streets and call those same people to account for what's going on in their own community.
Just a few suggestions, but they certainly have a chance of being more effective than doing the same thing the same way with the same people, over and over again.
And a good time to ask questions of the mayoral candidates to see if any of them have the guts to even be honest, much less to try something that might work.

  5. ^^ you forgot to mention more technology the chief already spoke about which is 24/7.
If it is not everybody's problem then you can't fund your suggestions.
Consistent logic is a bitch, i know.

  6. 6:19 you know who the problem is, murderous blacks is the problem, when we get a real mayor who supports the police then we can make progress. Thechnology is a very small part of the solution not the answer.

  7. Shot spotter has done nothing to solve crime, all it’s done is prove what everybody already knew, where the constant gun fire is, doesn’t do any good if there’s not enough police to respond. Consistent logic is a bitch, I know.

  8. @6:19am
KCMO government has plenty of money, which is demonstrated almost daily at the tens of millions thrown away on vanity projects, consultant studies, special interest ideas, and all the rest.
It's just that public safety isn't a priority for either elected or appointed officials.
And when issues and responsibilities slip lower on the priority list, they get neither the attention nor the funding they deserve.
    Governing consists of making choices.
Your comment about "affording" such a critical municipal service really misses the point.

  9. Hire more street Cops so I can at least walk down the street with some safety in the neighborhood!
