TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! TENSIONS FLARE AT CITY HALL AS NEW KANSAS CITY AIRPORT PLANS CONTINUE TO CRASH AND BURN!!!

Here's a more detailed and captivating analysis of today's big meeting than ANYTHING posted by MSM. Checkit:

Awesome TKC Reader: Aviation Committee meeting today

Today’s meeting of the City Council’s Aviation Committee was like a picnic in a field of landmines. Excitement-wise, there was the explosion between Councilman Reed and Councilwoman Loar. Reed was throwing kisses to the airport staff and Edgemoor, gushing about how he’s talking to airline executives about the airport's fabulous work. Councilwoman Loar jumped in at that point (I’m paraphrasing here): Wait a minute Councilman Reed, you’re talking to the airline executives? Who authorized you to do that? Who’s negotiating the airport deal, you or the airport? Reed was visibly not thrilled with Loar’s line of questioning, demanding that she stop interrupting him and to knock of her “combative behavior.” Loar shot back, demanding that Reed provide a list of the airline CEO’s he’s been chatting up. Evidently, trying to figure out what's going on is being "combative." If anybody at the KC Star was able to drag themselves away from lunch long enough to watch this slap fight, the headlines almost write themselves.

“Don’t Worry. The airlines are paying for all of it.” Not yet they’re not. And based on today’s Council show, we have no idea when they might or even if they will. We learned the airport has presented the various airlines with a firm cost for construction of the new airport (ca. $2 billion including bond financing, with a total vig just over 4 billion over 35 years), as well as estimated airline use fees and rents. The big news is that the airlines now take this deal to each of the airlines’ CEOs, shareholders, etc. for a final in-or-out decision. When will each airline decide yes or no? Who knows? We do know the airlines aren't experiencing any excitement to sign this deal.

Then there was the report on the new airport’s environmental study, which must be completed by the feds before any construction can start. We were told part of this deal is a Programmatic Agreement that requires seven signatures to be finalized. Four signatures are in hand, so we were told. We know that four of the required seven signatures must come from American Indian tribes. Are any of these tribes balking on the environmental study? We don’t know. Nobody on the Council was quick enough or gutsy enough to ask the obvious: who’s signed at this point. We also learned that the environmental study can’t be completed until the FAA writes responses to each of the comments made on the environmental study by officials and the public. How many comments are there? We don’t know, it could be hundreds. How long will that take? Anybody got a crystal ball?

Finally, a vote on paying out $72 million in city money to keep the current deal alive has been postponed again. What happens if the Council won’t vote for this payment? I think we all know the answer to that question.

7 billion before work is done, sometime around 2030.

  2. People should blame the airlines for balking at signing on this over priced boondoggle. Airlines and taxpayers are getting screwed over this fiasco.

    City leaders failed again.

Time to start the rehab of the city's planned obsolescence of KCI.

  3. Reed has zero idea what he is doing, and i suspect the airlines know that.
Good on Loar, 'combative behaviour' is sexist, coming from someone who you would think would be more sensitive about such things in today's climate.

  4. Reed is dangerous. He doesn't know what he's doing and he's running for mayor making private deals. The guy needs to be reigned in.

  6. The airport has the potential to really help KC, why are the commenters on this blog so committed to tearing everything down?

    2. As a "commenter" I feel that this forum is one of the last remaining venues to share the alternative views to some of City halls hijinks. This project (much like the toy train) seems designed to include a hundred different ways for politicians and their fuckbois to line their pockets with kickbacks. We (commenting taxpayers) never get the full projected costs up front to help decide if we (taxpayers)want to invest our cities money. We hear about "how little that it will cost" and " go ahead and vote for it". Then, when the bills start to roll in, City Hall says "oopsy, oh well, too much has been done already to back out, looks like we gotta pay.". Several kansas City politicians are crooked, and Hopefully our new mayor will encourage more transparency up front on projects like this. Good luck to lame duck Sly, hopefully you can get your job playing piano at Showbiz back after you leave office.

  7. I think this description is being too nice to Reed. The guy was out of control today.

  8. 7:11 they are tearing down huge debt. Sure the airport has potential to help KC, but the proposed shrunk airport and the proposed debt do not.
How is that difficult to understand.
I am beginning to believe it is the fluoride in the water.

  9. we can buy fluoride toothpaste, no need to keep disposing manufacturing waste in water under the pretense of healthy teeth.

  15. that's the whole airport committee?

    ReplyDelete
  16. if that the whole committee, the boondoggle is understandable and inevitable.
Many cities actually require a real committee of local volunteer professionals in the city who have no financial interest, which is wise.
    Did that happen?

  17. when i say 'professional' i mean construction design architecture and aviation, not lawyers or the veterinarian.

And collectively write a column on how the Donald Trump wall was built in racist times and must be taken down even though it proved to work. Right after that Lewis penned a column on his old VW and how racist the sky and clouds are and how he couldn’t understand why he didn’t qualify for Menzsa.

  23. This is going to go down as one of the biggest debacles in KC history. Already is. When all is said and done, the citizens of this city will find themselves paying for things they never imagined. I am so sick of the current talking heads at city hall.
