TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN STREETCAR CELEBRATES FAKE NEWS RIDERSHIP WINNING DESPITE FEDERAL TRANSIT FUNDING CUTBACKS!!!

The hype machine for the toy train can't stop or the entire Downtown Kansas City development ponzi scheme falls apart.

To wit . . .

TOY TRAIN CHEERLEADERS TOUT EPIC RIDERSHIP NUMBERS WHILST OVERLOOKING FUNDING & WINTER FAIL!!!

Remember the local tax base supports sorry excuse for public info and continued rail transit cheerleading despite the public moving forward and having much more fun with electric scooters.

Accordingly, low lights from last year this news report glosses over . . .

- UMKC rejected the downtown campus gambit and that was the biggest driver of public tax dollars to extend the line to the Plaza & beyond.

- Federal funding fell apart as the litany of complaints against rigged votes and developers hijacking Democracy clearly resonated in D.C.

- The very popular Missouri Auditor who was reelected by a landslide declared that Transportation Development Districts like the toy train scheme are ‘rigged against the citizens’

And so . . .

OVERALL 2018 WAS ONE OF THE WORST YEARS CONFRONTING THE STREETCAR AND THE ONLY REAL HIGHLIGHTS ARE FAKE SENSOR COUNTING AND MORE TOY TRAINS PURCHASED BECAUSE OF CONSTANT BREAKDOWNS!!!

This completes our fact check, with news links to back up our thesis . . . And so, in fairness, here's what the streetcar had to say about their progress.

Checkit:

KC Streetcar Ridership Soars in 2018

(Kansas City, Missouri) – KC Streetcar ridership continues to grow with more than 5.5 million rides since opening day in May 2016.

During 2018, KC Streetcar ridership logged seven straight months of year-over-year monthly ridership growth and closed out the year with a total of 2,114,886 rides, up from 2,060,327 in 2017. The KC Streetcar marked its 5 millionth ride in September and its highest one-day ridership on July 6 with 19,181 trips.

“The steady increase in streetcar ridership is a direct reflection of the residential and employment growth downtown,” said Tom Gerend, executive director of the KC Streetcar Authority. “For every new housing unit built, the KC Streetcar gains another rider. More streetcar riders equal more downtown activity and a direct downtown economic impact,” Gerend continued.

Additional 2018 KC Streetcar ridership statistics include:

- The average daily ridership was 5,794
- The Big XII Basketball Tournament completed 31,009 trips
- The 3-day Labor Day weekend had 33,424 trips
- 262,593 trips were completed in July, the highest ridership month to date
- 169,254 trips were taken in December, an increase of more than 19,000 from the previous December

In 2019, the fleet for the downtown KC Streetcar line will increase by two as additional streetcars are added. This will help to decrease waiting times for passengers and allow for additional capacity during large scale downtown events.

  1. The streetcar was a legacy of the Obama era. That time is gone. Glad we only have to deal with this small line instead of a more elaborate system. Streetcar funding is no long a priority.

    1. They need to hype the heck out of this thing. Nobody rides in January or February. I don't blame them for faking enthusiasm. You may not like it TKC, but it's still important that supports the streetcar considering how much we have invested in it.

    2. A simple question, I don't hate or love the streetcar but why are there so many closed storefronts along the main streeet if it's so good for business? Just asking, do not want to start a fight.

  5. the toy train and improvements downtown technically do have the luxury of helping the convention community, as would an extension to the Plaza.

  6. Whenever the city starts charging, which they should, for ridership of the fair weather toy train the same as they do with the bus system ridership will dramatically fall.

    ReplyDelete
  7. the only way to save the plaza, while increasing conventions, may be to have the toy train shuttle convention visitors to the plaza.
Communities all over the world have adopted the motto 'don't scare the tourists.'

  8. It is a ridiculous excuse for transit! You can walk faster and eventually maintenance will take a toll! Rode it once, not a big deal. Not going to rely on it for transportation.

  14. The streetcar, a teachable example of exactly what not to do with public money and exactly how not to do it. One of many money pit boutique attractions that light up a small sliver of downtown while the rest of the city pays and pays.

  15. The streetcar isn't going further. It just has to build up public sentiment in order to make sure the consulting contracts keep coming in.

Actually, worth it to bust their constant press releases.

  16. Seems to me, with 65,000 people visiting KC every day, the numbers should be higher.

  17. The streetcar smells like urine and crap due to all of the locals who use it to go to McDonald's with their kids who are filthy! It's gross!

Crime, store selection (Cinnabon’s?), what’s the point?
    It was charming decades ago.
Johnson County is the place to be.
Street cars for free while demanding tax-payer money (including the poor) is a terrible business model.
Johnson County International Airport will lead the way- business people there understand!
