TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! KANSAS CITY CONSIDERS WINNERS AND LOSERS AFTER MLK RENAME FIGHT ON THE PASEO!!!

Following a year of contentious debate that put Kansas City in the national spotlight, council finally made a decision and approved a name change on The Paseo Blvd in order to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the aftermath, as media captured cheering politicos and faith leaders crowding the council chamber and flexing for the cameras . . . The struggle was clearly political and had very little to do with civil rights.

To wit . . .

CELEBRATE THE WINNERS & LOSERS OF THE KANSAS CITY MLK RENAME FIGHT!!!

The only thing left is the crying given that the decision is final there won't be any legal fight or petition to challenge the sketchy effort because no lawyer or voter in their right mind would sign up to oppose tribute to MLK and subsequently face universal rebuke.

Accordingly, here's how it works out the morning after . . .

THE WINNERS

Councilman Quinton Lucas

It's his legislation that ultimately passed. Supporters threatened a public vote but ultimately backed down because of the lack of a funding mechanism. After an embarrassing DUI bust the Council Dude sought to rally his base of supporters in the 3rd District and made the rename effort the crowning achievement of his tenure. This power play will distinguish him from his competition and places the young Councilman as the Mayoral front runner within the inner city.

Congressman Cleaver

The former Mayor and Kansas City Rep. in Congress was the architect of this effort and his advocacy emboldened and inspired supporters of the cause. It's not his biggest victory but certainly part of his record that has secured hearts, minds and votes among constituents who send him back to D.C. one election after the next.

MLK Family And Estate

The MLK fam is in for A HUGE PAYDAY FROM KANSAS CITY and our blog community broke this fact of life story FIRST. Now all that's left is some transcription of the deets and the inevitable newspaper fake news attempting to downplay the fee. Fact is, MLK is a powerful brand that KC will be forced to buy into . . . Year after year.

And now a bit of salt with this morning serving . . .

THE LOSERS

Mayoral Candidate Quinton Lucas

Again, the Revs promised a vote but in the end a rush and sketchy ordinance drafted by Councilman Quinton Lucas was pushed through amid a contentious vote. What's worse is that the funding mechanism, as always, will be largely hidden from voters.

Accordingly . . .

THE GREATEST LEGISLATIVE ACHIEVEMENT OF COUNCILMAN QUINTON LUCAS SHOWS US THAT HE'S MORE THAN WILLING TO BYPASS VOTERS AND HIDE FUNDING AND GENERAL FUND COSTS WITHIN BYZANTINE ORDINANCES!!!

More important than Internet trolls and racist overtures against the rename . . .

This legislative move offers a preview of Mayor Quinton Lucas and his tactics that will fight for special interests and COMPLETELY OVERLOOK the important requirements of direct Democracy that serve to gain broader consensus.

Translation: He'll lose as many if not more votes for mayor than what he'll pick up for this victory.

Northeast News

Over the past year they've piled up one great editorial after the next but still didn't manage to move the dial. To be fair, they provided a valuable service to their readers and the community by taking up opposition against MLK Blvd on The Paseo. Sadly, as the newspaper moves to a patron model and away from advertiser support, this ruckus threatens to limit their reach beyond the confines of the fun clique of urban core gentrification enthusiasts.

Council Lady Alissia Canady

More than anybody else she put herself out on a limb in her NO VOTE against the MLK rename. Sadly her principled stance might only convince the closest City Hall watchers whilst most plebs and voters simply obey talking points and orders from neighborhood leaders. Council Lady Canady rightfully brought up legal concerns and her problem with the lack of consensus around the project. She didn't oppose the MLK rename but is one of the very few people who simply wanted a more regulated process that didn't skip any steps to reach the end goal. Nevertheless, her vote is unlikely to win over MLK critics who are already voting for Clay Chastain . . . And she obviously made enemies among residents of her district and throughout the urban core in the aftermath of this debate.

And so . . .

The Paseo now passes into history as Kansas City will soon establish MLK Blvd which is guaranteed to act as yet another racial dividing line and demarcation point tragically enforced by KCMO's African-American leadership upon their own people.

You decide . . .

Comments

  1. Too pessimistic. The market doesn't care about names, only money. Very sure that the new developments won't stop for this and the old churches and their congregants are on the way out. The East side is not really the east side. That game has moved to Grandview. Sorry. Not Sorry.

    2. I think Mayor James also needs to be counted as a loser in this vote. He forced a planning committee that wasn't the least bit useful. In the ned he just wasted people's time. And that is his real legacy.

  2. Quinton Lucas doens't need the northland votes. He'll make it to the primary and destroy the white opposition just like he did yesterday!

  4. I think this issue will be decided at the polls. Those who voted for the waste of tax dollars will find the taste of defeat come election time. Talk about a move that hands down will sway a lot of voters to go with Clay.

    ReplyDelete
  5. There will be a petition that stops this

Also, the only good I can think of is perhaps it will push the troost dividing line eastward and people can start redeveloping the area between troost and the paseo now.

  6. So is this to make local clergy happy or an attempt to pacify East KC after being seriously screwed over and left out of the game for the past 8 years?

    ReplyDelete
  7. The biggest loser is the unnamed forgotten taxpayer. Oh, and the poor folks who own property on MLK. At least the declining property values will mean smaller tax bills.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Technically it's a symbolic wall more then anything. Black folks on one side of it and white folks on the other. Kansas City has become famous for fucking things up since Sylvester took charge. The question is how much more damage will be done before Sylvester rides off into the Sunset.

  9. This shows that Lucas and Cleaver don't care about the Hispanic/Latino community or their votes.

    ReplyDelete
  10. As usual, career politicians like Lucas and Cleaver are focusing on things like street names instead of substantive issues like crime or reducing our water bills.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Real translation: Lucas just lost the mayor's race.

  12. Lucas needs to put on a bow tie and clown suit and then he will lead the pack.

  13. @10:07, you'll have to wait until the location of the New Jackson County Jail is selected, then the entrance drive can be named "President Trump Avenue"!

  17. You may be right, second @10:30, but I think it'll more likely be a Lawsuit that stops this travesty!

Kansas City's Charter requires that petitions for a name change of this sort be accompanied by signed approval of 75% of the Property Owners whose property abuts the street in question.

When you consider the length of the Paseo, I'm skeptical that the Coalition advocating this change were able to get that 75% approval in writing.

If the original Petition did not have those signed approvals attached at the time of filing, then any and all actions taken on the matter after the original filing are in violation of the Charter and are invalidated under City Law.

  18. As usual with KCMO city "government", the biggest losers are the taxpayers.
Watching the electeds get intimidated and rolled by the usual suspect revs and Cleaver, none of who have any responsibility for how much this will cost KCMO residents and businesses FOREVER, it's just another example of how NOT to make decisions.
It would be nice to have at least a couple of the mayoral and council candidates with the moral courage to do the right thing for ALL the taxpayers in KCMO, but that hasn't been the case in a very long time and doesn't appear to exist with the current list.
Sad to watch cowardice, irresponsibility, lack of leadership, and upside-down priorities to combine in one terrible decision.

  19. Alissa Canady’s no Vote was a pleasant surprise. I’d like to buy her lunch...oh, wait. Maybe not lunch... that would be a hell of a lot of money and thus unethical.

  20. My guess is that about 20% of these unqualified (Except for the color of their skin.) dumb shits can do long division. I doubt any of them have any idea who Adam Smith was, or, Jefferson Davis, or, Thomas Jefferson, or, what a "Buffalo Soldier was, or, US Grant, or, Nathan Bedford Forrest, or, John Brown or, know the first thing about the Civil War, when if was fought, who fought in it etc. etc.

But, they are black and see every thing through the lens of "victim hood" and let's all "Hate on whitey".

MLK Blvd is a curse on ANY street named accordingly and a curse on those who are ruined financially by way of this pernicious and misguided initiative. Property values - my guess, fall by about 20% the day you name the street after MLK. Crime, rapes, murders and black violence are exactly what is associated with the streets all over the USA, named after MLK.

Jack, who lives in California: "You're fired!!"

  22. Ms. Canady will come out of this in fine shape!

When the Court invalidate the vote of the Council on the basis of violation of the provisions of the City Charter, and the screaming and hysteria stops, she will be seen as the only African American Councilmember who had read, understood, and acted within the Code Of Laws governing the Office she holds.

She's probably going to be in a reasonable position to succeed Clay Chastain as Mayor in 2027.

  23. Ms Canady for mayor! I won't be casting my vote for any of those other people-show them the Chris Rock video...

  28. The winners in this latest cluster are the King family who just added a big chunk of cash to their yearly income from KCMO. (Profiting on your dead relative; very classy!)
The losers are the poor saps that live and pay taxes in KCMO whose majority did not want this change but had it forced on them by a crooked mayor and a crooked council.

  29. Cleaver has done nothing for Kansas City since he began in politics except make things worse for the people he says he's "helping".

  30. How many mlks are there? Does it even matter... There werent alot if paseos, it was unique...now we get a hollow tribute and a populous that failed martin luthers ideals. Mlk the emblem of a failed idea the old artifically venerated pimp aka pastor.

  33. Show me a MLK in any big city that isn't in a minority, crime-ridden, broken down part of town. An address on MLK will be a kiss of death, but if you are a resident of the blvd, you were already in critical condition. This qact is just going solidify the east side/west side opinions and prejudices.

  34. Are royalties being paid to the O'Neil, Bond, Watkins, Truman, Kauffman or Kemper families for using their fathers names ?

Name it the Greedy King Family Drive.

  35. Martin Luther, a famous man way before MLK.
King, a very common word and last name.
If the combination can be trade marked, what keeps any combination of words from being trademarked ?
If this stupid idea goes through the least the city can do is make the lazy MLK family get off their asses a file a lawsuit to get royalties. Bring some attention to this bull shit nation wide.

  36. Just great. Now I have to change address on letterhead, envelopes, biz cards, web site, all of my registrations with purchasing entities to get business, tax entities, the list goes on..... you know what, eff this, I am relocating....

  37. The city can't even pick up rusted water and sewer lines left on the side of the road at 57th and Central for months but they can go through the expense of renaming The paseo??? This is just another racial divide just like Troost! How stupid! But then again that's a liberal city!

And don't forget you will pay year after year to the King family for the right to use his name. NOW THAT'S STUPID WITH AN EXTRA BEHIND IT LMAO

    ReplyDelete
  38. Where do I get my Clay Chastain yard sign?

    ReplyDelete
  39. We elect people to make decisions for us, not to come up with more shit for us to vote on. Lucas should and will be commended for getting this over the finish line without it reaching a public ballot.

He solidified his base. Cleaver loves him. All pastors love him.

Nobody who doesn't want MLK cares enough about it to even look and see who sponsored the bill. And if they do, they already weren't voting for Quinton if you know what I mean.

Oh and Canady is done now. At least Jermaine knew to get in line. He might survive after all.

Base locked = Vegas lock of the Week = Mayor Quinton Lucas

    1. In KCMO they will not only vote for him, they’ll probably commission a 20 ft statue of him to go on Ward Pkwy. KC obviously wants to be lumped in with Detroit and E STL.

    2. I love this trash Lucas meme. Y'all act like you know him, which you don't. But the funny part is that you're making him MORE relatable calling him drunk and gay. It's 2019 bitch! Drunk gay dudes are the new boys next door. Chip off the old block.

You're not only limiting Jolie's uniqueness, but you're giving the average white Joe 6 pack something to relate to as well. Hilarious effort.

Lucas is straight and occasionally has a beer. But keep it up. You just might get him across the finish line.

  44. Lucas finishes 4th. East side stays home April. Stop giving him money. He doesn't have the momentum. Jolie Justus is the candidate to beat.

  45. I grew up 4 blocks from The Paseo, and have been around Paseo most of my life. It's Paseo. It'll always be Paseo. No disrespect meant to Dr. King or to his legacy, but it's Paseo. It'll "pass into history" when I do.
