Congressman Cleaver and Congresswoman Davids to Hold Press Conference To Announce Local Support for Federal Workers

Members will highlight local efforts to assist federal employees impacted by the partial government shutdown

(Kansas City, MO) – Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) and Congresswoman Sharice Davids, (D-KS) will hold a joint press conference Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at the KCATA Kansas City headquarters to recognize public and private entities that are willing to work with federal employees and federal contract workers impacted by the partial government shutdown.

Congressman Cleaver’s and Congresswoman Davids’ offices have been contacting banks, credit unions, local utility companies, and municipal and county agencies to inquire about relief for those who have been furloughed or those not receiving their regular pay due to the shutdown.

Joining Congressman Cleaver and Congresswoman Davids at the press conference will be various utility agencies and banking institutions, from Kansas and Missouri, who are providing assistance to workers by setting up repayment plans for certain utilities or providing low interest loans to federal employees impacted by the shutdown.

“When Congresswoman Sharice Davids approached me on the House floor about the federal workers in her area, I knew we were both feeling the same concerns and we both wanted to do something to help them. I am delighted to be standing with her today to offer some sort of relief as we continue working to end the shutdown,” said Congressman Cleaver.

“Kansas City area federal workers and contractors aren’t at fault for the shutdown mess and they shouldn’t be forced to deal with the consequences of Washington’s dysfunction. We need to get the government back up and running but as this situation goes on, I’m glad to be working with Congressman Cleaver to try to help people in our area who are furloughed or working without pay. We have asked local utility companies to consider payment plans and to not shut off services due to unpaid bills for local people being impacted by the shutdown,” said Congresswoman Davids.

When: Tuesday, January 22, 2019 9:30 a.m. – 10 a.m.

  1. Dems are starting the big push now. I would like to see the President help workers more. Honestly not trying to join the hatred against him. He must know that federal workers are having a hard time and I haven't seem him do much to help any relief effort. He could help with a lot of information from his Twitter. I know his people don't read this blog but it's not a bad idea for supporters of the president to show a bit more mercy to federal workers. It doesn't make any sense to declare war on almost a million Americans.

  3. A glorified anti-trump rally. I'm sure there will be a lot of signs slamming the president.

  4. The issue with the democrats is they want this open border to allow more unskilled workers into lower the wages of workers they say they are trying to help with minimum wage increases. Something just doesn't make since when Koch's and Chamber of Commerce want open also. We need the wall so wages can increase.

  5. Two of the greater Kansas City's idiots unite. Between the two of them I doubt there is enough brain power to pull a door close. But one thing that the two have going for themselves is they both agree that neither should have to repay a business loan.

  9. I am a government worker and there was no congressional support or initiative for the government workers during the previous two shutdowns. Hope this one goes on for 3 or 4 more months as I am well prepared. This is a very enjoyable time.

  11. Just two more crooked democrats yapping and looking for handouts.
An Iranian-American businessman who gave money to Democrats including former President Barack Obama should be released early from his 12-year prison term for a $292 million bank fraud and moved to home confinement, his lawyers said on Friday. His criminal case was separate from his political activities. These included being a top "bundler" of contributions to Obama's 2008 presidential campaign and donating money to Hillary Clinton, who was Obama's first secretary of state and lost her own White House run in 2016 to Trump.

And you clowns want to impeach Trump.

  12. Cleaver fronted the opposition to I-49 in KC, which led to the the most dangerous and inconvenient stretch of road in the entire metro area.

  15. You can help the workers & AMERICA by passing a budget bill including money for border security. Enough already. Anyone who governs through PR stunts is despicable. Both sides

  19. Definitely build the wall.

  20. Agree with @7:35 and @7:49, we NEED THE WALL!
But we need it to be built around Mar-A-Lago, and need it to include a roof!

  22. Funny how all of the democrats wanted a wall and now that Trump is Pres. they don't want the wall or say stupid things like build it around Mar A Lago.

I'll bet you democrats didn't know Schumer voted for the wall during the Obama Administration.

Also to you folks who say Trump is keeping us from getting paid, That's not true Trump has wanted to negotiate with Pelosi numerous times and she refuses. This is on the democrats, as always they love to put people out of work and don't care.

Trump is not going to give into them to keep this country safe and you democrats do nothing but stomp on this country! I Hate you people!

  23. Is anyone else shocked at how few workers have the most basic rainy day fund???

Now this week it was determined they can file for "unemployment". Question, is being furloughed, with the proven law just passed that they WILL be given their back pay when it's over--is that actually "unemployment"/

How many contractors work on spec--bill their client, and get paid months later--yet none of us were ever eligible for unemployment.

    And question #2--
so if they TAKE unemployment, then when it's over, shouldn't we DEDUCT THAT AMOUNT from their back pay? And consider it was like a loan or an ADVANCE?

    That's how contingency fees work.

  24. FYI: here's a little bit of help for those truly struggling

PayPal is offering $500 cash advance, with no interest, to furloughed federal workers who have been impacted by the government shutdown.

  25. Tracy, Good points. I've said from the start of this that the government employees (not all are workers) would get back pay, then Trump, the villain that he is according to all minimum wagers above, said it too. It's been that way for a long time now.
They can have it deducted from their pay, take it out of the built up vacation or sick days, write a check (no not that since they can't go a month without pay they don't have the money in a bank) or have it deducted from future paychecks.
As for Davids and Cleaver their level of intelligence wouldn't flicker a light bulb.

  29. Lots of politicos in d.c. have millions of dollars. Went there broke and super rich now... they can put a fund together to help folks out with 100 million bucks..

starting with nancy pelosi.. Clinton foundation and Charles Schumer and others who are holding up the request.

Bottom line these same politicians are cool with abortion to kill unborn babes of americans, where's the love here.. they want America destroyed folks...

but have lots of concern for folks who decide to run rough shod into usa... they'll treat dogs better than these defenseless babies.

no one said they can't come in just do it right...

Year's ago reverend cleaver was allegedly associated with planned parent hood... again folks need to look at the heart of a man to see how black the soul is..

this is speaking about all the ungodly in politics directing things....
