STEVE ROSE QUITS KANSAS CITY STAR!!!

One of the finest journalistic careers in Kansas City metro history is now kaput.

Here's the damage . . .

KCUR: Kansas City Star Columnist Steve Rose Resigns Amid Defamation Claim By Overland Park Senator

Deets:

Kansas City Star columnist Steve Rose handed in his resignation Saturday after Kansas Senate Majority Leader Jim Denning accused Rose of falsely attributing statements to him about Medicaid expansion.

Rose, who is not an employee of The Star but has written a political column for the newspaper for years, told KCUR that The Star accepted his resignation on Monday.

Often jealous and petty newsies obsess over this stuff but I've noticed the public doesn't really care about the sausage-making of political content. I wish Mr. Rose would've pushed back against the flimsy complaint but a nearly freebie column at a paper that fewer and fewer people read probably isn't worth the trouble.

Nevertheless, Mr. Rose goes down on a sad note but we still think the scribe has more fight left in him and hope to see his work reappear soon on a local blog  . . . Someday.

  1. In the sad wasteland that the newspaper business is in this metro, Rose finally going away represents at least a tiny plus.
He was never either "finest" or a "journalist" and clung for decades to his desperate dream of being a player with the big-time Chamber swells, but never made the cut.
His worldview was that from the country club set in Johnson County and his real knowledge of even his own community was both narrow and shallow.
So now he joins a very long list of "formers" from the Star who will not be missed.

  2. There's a lot of things I would call this but "flimsy" isn't one of them. Here's hoping Denning bankrupts him and those Marxist wannabe's on the Star board.

Just what we need, another disgraced Red Star has-been bloviating their leftist drivel not unlike that other loser Yael whateverthefuck's hisname.

  3. Is denning such a dolt that he doesn't realize he just gave Steve Rose's claims a huge measure of credibility?

Has he never heard that "an un-prodded pig doesn't squeal"?
Nothing indicates guilt more than a politician attacking the Media with charges of "fakery"!

The very existence of a politicians vehement denials bestows credence.

  5. 7:30 Credible journalists don't resign in the face of a libel suit.

  6. @9:05, Credible Politicians don't file libel suits, either.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of either Rose or the "Falling Star", but Denning has just made sure that Rose's allegations will always be tagged to him.

As Momma Gump said, "stupid is as stupid does".

  7. @9:30, is that an attack on my President?

  8. @9:05 - Please learn the differnce between libel and defamation. Libel is spoken and defemation can be either one. You sound like a rube when you get it wrong.

    1. For the record, libel is written. Slander is spoken.

  9. Steve would have won. This is really just the Star wanting to put him out to pasture. Too bad, he was one of the few "conservative" voices they've got.

  10. Just a wording mistake. Steve should've said "I think" or "it seems" he would have been fine. Suing a reporter makes the Republicans look week even though it's great to take down a star reporter and a prize for them all.

  11. New nickname for you TKC: Slander Steve.

    You're welcome.

  12. ^^^^^^^ LOL!

Watch the entire GOP use that one.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The Star doesn't have the money to defend their opinion writers. Any longer looks like their finished as a newspaper.

    Think about it.

  14. Steve needs to hang it up and completely retire. I don’t know anyone who has any interest in his musings.

  15. This was nothing but revenge for the way he helped skewer Kris Kobach.

The medicare debate is a boring sideshow and Denning a 3rd rate politician. This one cam straight from the Beltway.

  16. They've got too many columns in the Star anyway. More reporting would be nice.

  17. This is a strange one. Steve did leave himself wide open here but a misquote is not really defamation or libel. Agree with some of the comments on here that say it's really The Star that wanted to get rid of him and wasn't willing to fight it. Now the GOP owns them.

    Not a bad day's work.

A Rose, is a rose, is a Liberal!!!

  20. Sad to see Steve go. He was one of the last reasons left to read the Star. Now they don't even have a RINO. Just all lib.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Good riddance! Steve Rose is a worthless POS who isn't fit to write obituaries.

    ReplyDelete
  22. There go the tips of both left wings ! Now the Star will still fly left, just in a bit smaller circle. So what ?

    ReplyDelete
  23. He probably admitted to the Star management that he did not talk to the senator but got the info. off the internet and we all know that everything you read on the internet is true. Secondly, he was probably forced to resign.

    ReplyDelete
  24. How many other quotes did Rose make up?

    ReplyDelete
  25. The GOP in Kansas running scared. Steve was the last decent moderate journalist left at the Star. Seems like Denning is taking on Trump tactics to control the media.

    ReplyDelete
  26. innocent people don't resign. He was told to resign. He cannot back up his version. It's highly likely he took third or forth person rumor and ran with it because , well, he hates republicans. Unless they are like Democrats. Good riddance.

    ReplyDelete
  27. the earlier poster has it right, the star cannot afford the court costs. They probably would win but it would cost so much for a trial they can't afford the fight. Oh well, fuck the star

    ReplyDelete
  28. regarding Rose v. Yael (anonymous 7:29 pm): There is no comparison between the two. Yael had strongly held opinions, and sometimes expressed them arrogantly, but his opinions were always based on his own extensive reporting and research. As an editorial writer, he often scooped the Star's own newsside reporters assigned to City Hall. Rose, on the other hand, could crank out a decently readable column, but was more of a bloviator peddling the conventional wisdom of Johnson County Republican establishment. So it's not surprising that Rose has fallen victim to his reporting and ethical deficiencies.

  29. Hopefully he can still be a Ruckette sometimes.

Weird how some of you commenters are delighted by the downfall of print journalism in KC ...

    Thanks,

  30. Print journalism of the old standards is one thing, the content now and the posture is lame and don't upset any of the Missouri swells. They couldn't even call it a fix when it obviously was for example on the airport. Crosby K. and Steve did. That was when Sly knew his days were cooked, roasted, fried, done well but not well done. Steve was an old style Republican, and could cross over. The only people crossing over these days are the genders :)

  31. The most humorous part of this whole debacle is that a paragon of journalism ethics like Hearne Christopher (who can ever forget his scoop that a local weatherman committed suicide because he was being investigated in a old murder case and then just as suddenly said these unattributed stories were just horrible) has put in his two cents worth. Of course he does it by attacking the Star. (Ask him how many times copy editors saved his ass!)
