Former U.S. figure skating champion dies unexpectedly after being suspended from sport

John Coughlin, a two-time U.S. pairs champion who was suspended Thursday evening by the U.S. Center for SafeSport and U.S. Figure Skating, died Friday, according to a Facebook post from his sister. "My wonderful, strong, amazingly compassionate brother John Coughlin took his own life earlier today," Angela Laune wrote.

  1. I just read what his instructor wrote about him. This news is just heartbreaking. I can't imagine the pain his family is feeling right now.

  2. So he must have really been guilty of something and knew he was ruined and would be looked down upon for life and so he took the chicken way out of it all? Wonderful, strong, and amazingly compassionate people don't just up and commit suicide the next day after a suspension is handed down while under investigation for misbehavior. He knew what was coming and was too big a coward to face the public after the truth of who he really might have been came out.

  3. ^^^Or he wasn't guilty but knew that evidence is irrelevant to the pound-me-too-ers, and chose to not sit by while his good name was dragged through the muddy ice by a group of harridans. I don't kmow which is true, but neither do you.

  6. Suicide never strikes where you really need it.

    I'm looking at you, 6:54 and 8:05.

I'd suggest calling the OPPD to do a welfare check in hopes of getting a similar end result.

  7. 8:39 and 11:37 This pussy took his life because he couldn't face the fact that everyone was going to find out he was probably some kind of a pervert. He resigned a post from another company a few days ago. The charges of abuse must have been more than just hearsay.

  10. Some facts, for those that care about them before sharing their unfounded conclusions...

John was a truly generous young man, and very accomplished. He gave back to his sport and to his home town unselfishly. The local and national skating communities are very tight. And John was one of the most involved and high-profile members.

Literally in the spotlight since he was a child, with multiple girlfriends through the years, and many girls that were good friends. So, common sense alone demand these allegations get the highest degree of skepticism for them coming as a shock to everyone that should have had some inkling. We certainly owe it to John to be skeptical of even the slightest unkind word about him, let alone this.

John honorably resigned from his professional representation job, and faced having no more employment in the only environment he knew. No more income, and a mob mentality already judging him guilty. Try facing that future. The self-anointed watch dog SafeSport encourages anonymous tips, and not due process, so one wonders whether they'll consider this a learning moment, or a win.

It is a loss for the sport, and for the city, and for humanity.

  11. ^^^^^And your facts to back this are? Many people have been praised as to their involvement in society to later have it all fall apart when it becomes known that who or what the public thought a certain person might be or who they are perceived to be isn't the truth after all. When faced with being espoused for such has been know to push many into committing suicide or trying to commit such. Before praising who a person is wouldn't it be best to see what so far hasn't been released as to what the claims were about? A certain football player was espoused for abuse and people were crying for his head to be removed and kicked out of the sport. If the same is true for Coughlin then why should he be treated any different? I really believe he was guilty of something bad and bailed on life rather than to be alive and known for such.
The BTK killer is a good example, everyone thought he was a great guy and in fact he was a serial killer. His neighbors and fellow church members were stunned by the news, unable to believe that the man they knew was the serial killer that had haunted the area for so long.

  12. My facts to back this? Quoting myself... "The local and national skating communities are very tight. And John was one of the most involved and high-profile members. Literally in the spotlight since he was a child, with multiple girlfriends through the years, and many girls that were good friends."

Your facts? "A certain football player" (Kareem? Whose entourage knew exactly who/what he was?) and the BTK killer. Neither of whom apparently feel no shame.

Your conclusion is based on evidence that doesn't even apply. I'll rely on the shock of close-knit group that has watched and mixed with John for decades.

  13. Sorry the dude is dead but.....1/20/19, 1:52 PM

^^^^^Dude he must have fucked up some how or wouldn't have been suspended. Multiple girlfriends you say? Sounds like a player to me. From what I have read there appears to have been more than enough evidence presented to call for the suspension to be handed down after a month more or less of being on restricted status. Sure he said he was innocent but soon as it appears that Safe Sport is getting serious about the allegations he wacks himself. Hard on his family for sure but that does not mean the world has to all have the same feelings for him as you might. I have known of two people in my life that I knew who commited suicide, one was exposed as a child pervert and the other got busted for securities fraud. Both screamed they was innocent till the charges came about then bam they whacked themselves.

  14. Multiple girlfriends over the course of years is pretty healthy for a young man. That you would pervert that obvious assessment is more revealing of you than of this topic.

Clearly your intent is to view basic facts in their worst light, which isn't itself a bad practice, but to do so without weighing the other gradients, which is de facto bias.

Bias isn't even your worst practice, as bias can be efficient, and a helpful crutch to minds that can't reason deeply. No, the worst of your intent is to use this half-thought out bias as a weapon to beat the rest of us into sharing your shallow views.

You go right on seeking validation from strangers, i.e. trolling. Surely you know better than people that had direct contact over the course of years. Sorry to have interrupted your divine guidance, my point is made and I'll not post in this thread again.
