Apropos for #TBT . . . Fox4 brings up one of many bad and unworkable ideas for the Truman Sports Complex so that taxpayers can offer more financing for billionaire athletes and millionaire players. Take a peek:
But it would cost only around $1 billion! Surely competent people like White and Sly could carefully scour their respective budgets and find the bucks for such an exciting "project". Just look at how well the airport terminal and JaCo jailprojects are going. Think of the many more millions of tourists who would pour into the metro! World class! World class fantasy!

Of course the voters rejected building a rolling roof in 2006, THEY HAD ALREADY PAID for one!
The original Jackson County Stadium Bond issue included the same rolling roof that this article talks about, but SOMEHOW the money to complete the two Stadia "just disappeared"! There were even some discussions that a second Bond issue would be necessary in order to even get the stadia done in the roughly completed form they are now, but by cutting a lot of the "bells and whistles" (besides the Roof)that were in the original design the Authority managed to get something built.
Nobody knows what happened to roughly 1/3 of the Bond Money the taxpayers approved, the Authority and County Legislature were taking really, really good care of it, but one day they looked, and somehow "it had just vanished"! Of course there was no need for any explanation or investigation, instead everyone just pointed with pride at our magnificent facility.
Anyone else remember the big ads skip sleyster took out in the KC star to ask "where's the rolling roof?"? It was a favored refrain from one of the finest local gadfly/slumlord/activist any community could ever produce. I heard a story that one time skip put governor Holden in a headlock and gave him a dutch rub at a democrat fundraiser at Arrowhead. But skip had a heart to go along with his crazed brain: witness his name atop the donors listed on the plaque affixed to the Lincoln statue in front of city hall on the 12th Street side.
Arrowhead and Royals stadiums are examples of successful projects. Both ahead of their time.
All the cookie cutter and duel purpose stadiums designed and built in the 1960s and 70s have all been long since replaced with new billion dollar projects. Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Philly, Minnesota, Seattle, St. Louis, Detroit, Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, and San Diego have since done full replacements. Kansas City was able to do renovations in the 1990s and 2000s instead for a fraction of the costs.
The rolling roof was an add on design that didn't work out, but is not in the same category as the current airport debacle or the even flawed Kemper location and update.
Complaining about absolutely everything despite the merits doesn't help.
People who think of ideas like this need to be hunted down and shot.
