Great comment from our blog community this evening offers a some EXCEPTIONAL insight and perspective on a financial debate that should should familiar to local news readers. This take riffs off pension concern but offers a far better angle for comparison with local finances.

TKC Reader: Kelly Wants To SPEND!

Kelly's plan, essentially to make smaller minimum monthly payments on the state's credit card balance so that she can spend more money now, is exactly the type of move that the Star lambasted former Governor Brownback for during the extent of his term.

It also reminds me of the way in which KCMO City Manager Troy Schulte extended the repayment schedule for the failed Power and Light District perpetual financial shortfalls. In 2013-2014, KCMO taxpayers got stuck for about $14 million because the Cordish Company of Baltimore Maryland continues to swindle KCMO every year on the deal. Never mind that Mayor James and Council continue to reward Cordish with tax breaks, parking garages, and other perks for their luxury high-rise towers. Kicking the can down the road, when current officeholders will be long gone and taxpayers are wearing millstones around their necks."

The refinancing calls for adding seven years to the entertainment district’s debt payments, from 2033 to 2040. It lowers the payments from 2015 through 2019 and frees up cash to help pay for pension reform, especially in the 2014-15 budget. But it bumps up the debt payments between 2020 and 2040, a net increase in overall debt of $36 million."

"Treasurer Tammy Queen conceded it’s not usually prudent fiscal management to add to debt service payments..."

  3. Voters need to stop electing Mayor's and Councilpersons endorsed by those who benefit from bilking Kansas Coty taxpayers. Just look at who endorses the Mayoral candidates....... and the ones endorsed by the construction interests, development lawyers, developers, etc.....are the ones not to be elected, if voters ever want this spending game and political corruption to cease.

    1. That's the cornerstone of their existence. They believe every human on earth should be taken care of cradle to grave by US taxpayers.

  6. Overland Park doesn't owe anything to Cordish, to my knowledge. A lot of us live here to get away from KCMO criminal City Machine. PS, our schools are accredited and we get snow clearance. Nice! Can't wait for KCMO to lose its "earnings tax". Hehe.

  7. Granny's already planning how to spend more money on schools, indigent healthcare, LGBT, illegal aliens, etc., by putting the KPERS pension fund in jeopardy.

Kansas already had failed to properly fund the KPERS program that public employees rely upon in retirement. Now, Granny proposes falling further in arrears so that she can satisfy her porkstituents.

Just another politician? They seemingly always calculate where they can take money from today, while few are paying attention, to poison the well of tomorrow, leaving future Kansas retirees to go thirsty.

  8. ^^^^^^^^ 10+ What Granny Gov doesn't seem to comprehend is that at the time she would be forced onto KPERS that it matches almost exactly when it will collapse under it's own weight of not being sufficiently supported to make her payments.
I'll bet when she recognizes that fact her big ole Victoria Secret Granny Panties will be in a bunch. She will expect the next governor to save her.

Interesting to see when the failed Star and Helling lambasts granny the same as they did Brownback. They should be treating all offenders equally and not plat partisan politics.

    1. You’re right, they should. But the Fallen Star isn’t worth the caca that falls on it in birdcages around the city anymore. No objective stories that supply facts from both sides so people can think for themselves. Just mindless, leftist propaganda for the sheeple.

Nice; but you're given 1 demerit for the mental image of Granny in Victoria Secret panties! I'm retreating to my safe space.
