KCPD 2019 PROMISE: PROSECUTING CELEBRATORY GUNFIRE SUSPECTS!!!

We're halfway through January BUT this New Year's resolution from the po-po deserves mention . . . Local po-po promise a crackdown on party people who fire guns to celebrate good times. It's a bold declaration given that gunfire suspects throughout the year seldom confront consequences. Still, the effort should be appreciated.

Even better . . .

KCPD PROMISES TO USE SPY TECH SHOTSPOTTER TO BUILD CASES AGAINST CELEBRATORY GUNFIRE SUSPECTS!!!

This effort might be directly related to our blog community calling out the tech as "useless" given so much shooting this year.

A look at how the equimpent is being used to gather evidence . . .

"The ShotSpotter gunshot detection system covers 3.5 square miles of the city that have a high rate of gun violence and shots fired. Using that and recovered shell casings, officers found one address where 360 shots were fired on New Year’s Eve night, and they were from at least nine different guns, based on the calibers of the shell casings. In just East Patrol Division, officers recovered 180 additional shell casings from at least 13 other incidents."

The top cop post on the topic . . .

KCPD Chief: We're following up on New Year's Eve gunfire

Money line on how the crackdown might work . . .

"We are gathering evidence so that as many people who illegally discharged firearms on New Year’s Eve (which is prohibited by City ordinance) can be issued citations if possible. It’s likely that some of those discharging firearms cannot legally possess a gun (because they are convicted felons, for example), so we are working with our federal partners to build those cases, as well."

  1. They have had shotspotter for years now why hasn't it been used before now to go after these guys. They shot all night when Obama won they shot all night New's Year Eve, they shoot on 4th of July. Best place to catch them is Troost!!!!!! Imagine that.

    1. ^^^^ Absolutely right.

The new technology hasn't worked very will since now. What makes this night so special?

    2. They fired 360 shots in one night? Yeah, it's a safe bet there is more going on in that house than just public nuisance violations.

  2. This makes most NYE celebrations seem boring by comparison.

  3. That is dangerous behavior and a damn shame. But you have to admit, it sounds like one hell of a party.

  4. The gun nuts will hate this but this is a very real example that some people should not have guns and we need to fix our gun laws to protect our communities. Think about what this post really means for KCMO neighborhoods, we have people shooting into the sky like they were in some damn third world country. KC is no Iraq and if we need to take guns away to prove it. So be it.

  9. Adopting such new technologies can be difficult. Howmany meetings and how much training to sort the rounds and make all them Posta-Notes?

Altho +1 for finding all the live rounds rather than just the empty casings!

  10. The po-po can't stop anyone from popping a few rounds in celebration -- or after drinking all night -- or chasing their girlfriend around the yard just for fun. We hear gunfire almost every weekend from the park near our house. At first we were startled by it and debated whether to call the cops. Then we laughed and came to our senses. Call the cops? Why?
