Today most of the nation was abuzz about an essentially pointless social media kerfuffle betwixt a teen and an old school Native American dude . . . Meanwhile, back in Kansas City, the conversation was more polite and focused on the past.
A few takeaways as media attempts to offer a teaching moment to the NEXTGEN who care far more about fornite . . .
- Councilman and mayoral contender Quinton Lucas now owns the MLK street name issues and, while it might not play anywhere else in KCMO, it might be one of the keys to differentiate himself from his urban core competitors among the African-American community and traditional liberals in the Wark Parkway & Brookside corridor.
- The celebrations were low key today and a lot of that is because THE KCMO CIVIL RIGHTS GENERATION IS PASSING AWAY. Those who marched with Dr. King are getting harder to find and their stories are slowly becoming history at a time when Americans have hyper-short attention spans.
- The MLK legacy cuts both ways and while it's usually a stumbling point for Conservatives. More often, the Democratic Party seems unable to live up to the standards of the American icon. To be fair, in casual conversation even some leaders of the Black community have trouble navigating the current, confusing epoch of of identity politics.

ReplyDeletepeople are doomed to forget. Glad to see some of that old footage. the reality was a lot worse. Feel like there should have been more coverage in the newspaper other than old opinion articles. That is a good point you made, the civil rights leaders of the past are moving on and getting their story is important for KC history overall. Maybe a project better suited for the library.
