A municipal fact check is in order amid so much feigned concern: Kansas City hates the homeless.
A few quick examples . . .
The KCMO Health Department made international news for pouring bleach on their food.
City Hall is literally willing to sacrifice Constitutional rights to freely assemble in order to prevent panhandling.
There are constant raids of hobo camps, one so bad last year that it sparked a low key riot than has a major urban core road closed to this day.
However, in this cold, knowing that any extended amount of time on the street will end in death. Here's a roundup of local efforts to ease the suffering of local hobos until the weather warms up:

ReplyDeleteThe city needs to let the hobos/homeless ride the fair weather train during the cold weather 24/7. This will also let the city keep the utilization numbers for the fair weather toy train very high. In doing so the city will definitely create a false narrative about the actual ridership.

ReplyDeleteHomeless and choosing to live in the streets are two totally different things. Programs have rules, some people just haven’t hit their bottom yet and may never hit rock bottom. Enabling someone to continue poor life choices doesn’t solve it either. Not a hater, but not making the alternatives less attractive either.
It’s a difficult problem. I have a heart for those unfortunate souls who are down on their luck, donate to the st. Mary’s episcopal church food kitchen ~ 8th & paseo, etc., but the presence of a lot of homeless 100% of the time = litter everywhere and the presence of just a few homeless men standing around can totally destroy quality of life, property values, negatively change the tenor of public spaces like plazas parks and squares, etc.
