There's a Bike Lane Around Here Somewhere

Do you need an example of the price we pay when we fail to look ahead? Look no further than Kansas City's new parking protected bike lanes.The three-mile route opened in August, running along Armour Boulevard in Midtown. Advocated for by groups such as BikeWalkKC, the $700,000 project was highly praised by both city officials and the media.

  5. Don’t blame us cyclists for the silly armour bike lanes. We didn’t ask for them. To me armoir is a no-go zone those bike lanes have made it dangerous. 700 grand would have been better spent on a pothole crew or street sweepers bc this towns roads are pretty bad for cars or bikes. Please remember: bicycle activists and bicyclists are not the same thing. Thanks

  7. The elected politicians in kcmo are some of the stupidest people in this town. Most of us knew this would happen but no, you have these stupid ideas to make the city progressive like seattle or Portland, you are truly stupid an so are we, because we keep electing stupid people. The only solution is to buy land out of the area and watch this disaster from afar! Then you won’t have any tax dollars to collect and spend on frivolous projects!

  8. It seems certain that hundreds of KCMO millenial residents are bicycling to their tech jobs downtown in zero degree weather with a forty mph wind blowing.
    How are is the scooter "transit option" doing?

  10. Those so called protected bike lanes are the dumbest thing ever. The cars are parked in the middle of the street, you can't see to pull out of any side streets in Central Hyde Park and now they can't be cleared.

    What a stupid idea and waste of money and time. Paint over them and put lines back for parking. People are at risk for a crash just because someone wants to ride a damn bike.

  15. The problem is that something like this starts with the assumed end and then works backward. City planners are unwilling to push back against a concerted pressure group.

    Do these "protected" lanes actually make it safer even for the cyclists or do they just give City bureaucrats a way to get a pressure group off their backs -- with an idea that may (or may not) work in sunny San Diego? Or not? Did anyone on City Planning bother to check with the FIRE DEPARTMENT to see what impact this change might have on -- say -- how far up those tall buildings rescue ladders might reach from so far out in the street?

  16. Phil, those lanes vex motorists even if no cyclists are using them, and they give a false sense of security when they are being used by cyclists. I ride to work 80-90% of the time and I am against most of these silly “complete streets” fads. The parts of town that are the least accessible by bike are the areas where there have been the most planning dollars spent and streetscape fads heeded e.g. river market, P&L district, armour, what they are doing with these silly prospect MAX floating bus stops, 20th and 19th streets where there is mega curbs around new crossroads developments, etc etc. bike activists ARE NOT speaking on behalf of those of us who actually get around town on our bikes. Sorry I could rant on forever on this topic. Thanks,
