GROWING KANSAS CITY OPPOSITION AGAINST MLK RENAME ON THE PASEO!!!

One year of discussion hasn't offered any consensus about a controversial proposed name change of an iconic local street . . . The Revs promised a public vote but BACKED DOWN from their election efforts that would've required a funding mechanism and public disclosure. Now the move to ram through legislation has encountered growing public resistance as faith community leaders look to create political and racial dividing lines whilst a growing number of residents seem to agree the 63rd street solution makes more sense . . . More background here:

The history of The Paseo and why some neighbors are against changing the name

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The latest debate over renaming The Paseo to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. is almost a year old. As the for a vote on the issue, 41 Action News is looking back at the history of the prominent boulevard.

  7. here is their plan: They know everyone is against renaming the Paseo so the plan is to rile everyone up against it and then they come out and say "how about we compromise and name 63rd street MLK instead?" This will seem more palatable to the 90 percent of the city against the name change.

Fight this guys, don't ever let them name a street MLK in KC

Those elected into political office are supposed to improve the situation of the people. The Democrats have not lifted one finger toward that end. For the last year they have opposed everything the president has proposed for the betterment of America. How are things supposed to improve the lives of Americans if nothing gets done? The Democrats are only interested in the Democratic Party and have no interest in doing what they were elected to do. Their horrible disinterest in America has earned all of them the right to be voted out of office because they haven’t represented the people. They are so obsessed with the destruction of President Trump that they have lost sight of what the American people want and need, and have taken radical positions on immigration, taxes, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the wall, gangs, drugs, sanctuary cities, socialism, rule of law, violent protests, rebellion, etc. In my opinion, what the Democrats want is for the total destruction of the America I have known from my being a former registered Democrat for 65 years.

  12. Neighbors should be against this they will have to pay MLK's family every year to use his name. Want to pay more KC just go ahead and approve this. Don't forget where KC got the name of the Paseo in the first place unless you are trying to turn the city into a blacks only city which I think is what is really happening.

    NO whites right?????

  13. I am old enough to remember when my African-American HS classmates could not go to a restaurant with me, when black children could be lynched with impunity and white and black Civil Rights workers were murdered to prevent Americans from voting. That is one fight Dr. King led.

I am old enough to remember my HS classmates being drafted into the senseless slaughter of Vietnam. Dr. King spoke out -- at risk to reputation and more -- against that war. If he had been heeded, 30,000 American boys (by far, mostly white) would NOT have lost their lives. The grim Memorial Wall would be not half as long.

I am old enough to remember that Dr. King was leading the fight against economic inequality, marching in support of a LABOR UNION when he was murdered.

And I am not so old that I cannot clearly remember the America that he changed and clearly understand that change is for the better.

We have Boulevards named after farmers and a British Prime Minister. The Paseo has NO name: "Paseo" is merely the Spanish word for the French word "Boulevard". What does it say about us if we cannot name our Nameless Street for a great American hero who happens to be African-American?

  14. Phil, you are wrong "The Paseo" is a name. And for all the good things MLK did, they don't translate into reasons why to rename an existing street with tons of its own history.
If you want to take one of the many numbered streets in this town and rename it MLK, I don't have a problem with it, as long as the residents are in favor of it.

  15. The point you miss is that the streets in KC that are named for people are named for local people who had ties to the city from Benoist Troost to John Wornall to Buck O’Neill. Many people feel FDR did a great lot of good for America, but I wouldn’t be any more in favor of naming a KC street for him than for MLK. If the blacks feel underrepresented in street names, then champion naming one for someone local like Charlie Parker, Lucile Bluford or Henry Perry.

  16. Damn Phil what hell hole HS did you attend? During the Vietnam era I had black classmates and they ate at the same places I did. And Phil if Mr.King were still alive he would be major pissed at how so many blacks have pissed on all the hard work he did to open doors for them.

  17. They could change the name of Carwash Cleaver II Blvd. to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and no one would mind much. If the King family charges for use of his name, I'm sure the Reverends would be happy to pay for it with their Sunday collections.

    1. That would definitely be the “Christian “ thing to do, but I’m doubting Ol’ Car Wash would give two hoots about Christianity if it meant changing the name of Cleaver Blvd.

  19. Thanks Phil. MLK lost all his friends for courageously speaking against the Vietnam war. He knew he was going to be murdered but he spoke out anyway. I was recently looking at a lot of old Ebony magazines which are scanned in a database thru the kck library and reading the coverage of the Selma to Montgomery march which was a mArch for voting rights aS much as anything else. Amazing pics. It occurred to me that maybe that March was the original “yellow vests” because a lot of the marchers were wearing vests -orange but whatever.
    Thanks,
