Corporate Welfare Downtown Kansas City Convention Hotel Coming Soon?!?!

Based on drawings and promises this project earned $35-MILLION worth of up front financing form KCMO taxpayers. Now construction is moving slower than planned and a glut of local hotels has already been built up in and around the loop. Take a peek:

Jonathan Tisch, who leads the team developing the 800-room Loews convention hotel in Kansas City, says it is on track to open in spring 2020. He's hopeful it is ready in time for the Big 12 basketball tournament.

    1. It’s truly bizarre how you live on this blog and never offer any sort of intelligent debate. You obviously disagree with many other posters which is fine, but why don’t you use legitimate arguments rather than the same tired name calling and silly drivel?
As for this particular thread, try to put yourself in the position of a taxpayer. No one begrudges progress in KC except when the progress comes in the form of higher taxes on people that are trying to make a living for themselves and their families.
If you ever become a taxpayer you may look at things a bit differently.

  3. All the usual suspects who make bank on real estate "development transactions", including Burke, have already done just fine on this, thanks very much.
Now it just becomes a matter of whether the hotel can generate enough cash to pay its bills.
    Unlikely.
And KCMO taxpayers will become the lenders/subsidizers of first resort.
    Again.
    It never changes.

  9. I think what people need to understand is that no one is against the hotel per se. What people are against is how the city goes about doing business to get things like the hotel built. The city allows millionaire/billionaire developers to play fast and loose with OUR money. Money that should be going to tax payers is going towards the hotel. The hotel is a private development that should be 100% financed by those private stakeholders with no assistance from city/tax payers.

As it were, the optics are that nothing private can be developed in this town without public assistance. Which creates all kinds of financial gaps downstream and makes it so that, in order to finance infrastructure, taxes have to be raise funds to pave streets, upgrade libraries, fund mental health, etc.

That's the problem. The problem isn't the hotel itself. The problem is and always has been the fact that this city uses WAY too much of OUR money to prop up corporations.

10:25 is the proof why life in Kansas City is a disastrous mess. It's squirrels such as them who are breeding and voting to see that the city is not only ruined but bankrupt.

Kansas City is ran by democrats and nobody can show how that is good for the city. The Democratic (socialist) Party is determined to destroy the principles and form of government upon which this great nation was founded. It just didn’t start with Trump winning the election. His winning has just magnified their efforts. You must be stupid to not see what the Democrats are doing in their efforts to destroy Trump and this nation. Every week they try to use some “shocking” situation to keep the public eyes off the success this president has had. Every time there is a shooting, a renewed call goes out for gun control. It’s Trump’s fault for these shootings because he will not take guns away from law-abiding people. The liberal Democrats in some local and state governments have attempted to limit the flying of our nation’s flag because it offends Muslims. And what is all the Democrat’s hullabaloo now? Trump is taking children away from their parents. One month ago they loved a porn star, and now they are all about family values, i.e., separating illegal immigrants from their children at the border. The simple solution is not to let illegals into the country by enforcing the law. And of course, the Democrats will not mention that abortion separates the baby from the mother, via killing the unborn. That has nothing to do with family values. Right? All Trump is doing is enforcing the law made by the Democrats. All the egregious pictures you see of “caged” children were taken during the Obama years and are not current. Go back and listen to what the Clintons and Obama had to say about illegal immigration. They sounded like Republicans.

Democrats are committed to stopping Trump and his "America first" agenda, whatever the cost to the American people. Like the apocryphal commander in the Vietnam War, they will destroy the village to save it.

  15. @10:25am

You're calling someone else an idiot after that post you just dropped? Please son. I'd laugh if it weren't so sad. I've heard better responses from a rock than what you just provided.

Ignorance is bliss. And S'lie and all his corporate buddies love gullies like you. It's gullies like you who allow S'lie and his crew to get away with the shit they get away with. Tax dollars being redirected into private development....and this is a good thing to you? smh....

But please, keep being you. And when you get tired of watching your tax dollars get wasted by the truckloads then come back to the board. Until then, go sit down somewhere and let the grown ups talk.

  16. Hey 9:36am comment, I think the banquet/dining area is its own CID. That exclusive you mentioned may have to do with a funding source for the bonds. I heard there are three separate CIDs within the new convention hotel!! Seems silly to me and has spawned so many middlemen and so much rent-seeking behavior. Is lettting the streets and basic services rot while chasing after conventions a wise idea for our city???

    Thanks,
    Radishes

Some people on this blog, when it comes to things like this, are like kids throwing a fit inside Toys R Us when their mom won't drop a $1000 on toys for them on a whim while not realizing that mom has food to buy and utilities to keep on.

That's exactly what this city does. Instead of using money to pay for the necessities they divert it to buy the luxuries at the expense of the lower and middle class. And then when the budget comes up short due to that diversion of funds, they raise taxes to make up the difference. But just like that kid in Toys R Us, some people just don't get that and then want to come on blogs and call other people names instead of engaging in thoughtful debate.

It really is a shame on all fronts.
