TKC TOLD YOU SO!!! KANSAS CITY STREETCAR EXTENSION STAYS LOSING FEDERAL FUNDING!!!

Kansas City transit experts among our blog community deserve credit for calling this inevitable disappointment and a harsh reality that streetcar enthusiasts confront today.

To wit . . .

THE KCMO TOY TRAIN DIDN'T EARN ANY FEDERAL CASH AFTER THEIR NO VOTE EXTENSION EFFORT!!!

Remember that the toy train moving North was part of a sketchy real estate development scheme and against a public vote which required CITYWIDE APPROVAL.

Checkit:

KCUR: North End Of Kansas City Streetcar Extension Won’t See Federal Funding

Deets:

"The KC Streetcar Authority’s application for $25 million for the riverfront extension was rejected recently by the Federal Transportation Agency (FTA), Executive Director Tom Gerend said. That leaves the task of building the approximately 1/2-mile line, and perhaps longer, in local hands."

Now, remember that the extension to UMKC is still on the table but a $25-million ask rejected puts $125-MILLION in question as well.

More to the point . . .

  1. I want to see port kc pay for it through their slush fund. God forbid it would trigger an audit of that organization that is one of the most clandestine currently operating in KC.

    1. They're not going to be able to finish the line to UMKC until 2023? Will anybody care about the streetcar then?

    2. ^^^^ Oh no, by that time the numbers will be 100,000 a day filled with all of the condo dwellers in KC.

  2. Never understood the north extension.

Why are any taxpayers in Kansas City paying for a shuttle to a casino? Let the casino pick up the tab. Sorry.

  4. Let’s see how sLIE deals with this disaster, where will he steal money from this time, maybe he’ll eliminate the police dept to pay for it, it is the democrim way!

  5. Toot toot. No funds. Clunk.

  6. Chug chug toot toot here we go. Ok 10.00 all day pass for the street chichi.

  7. TKC, don't overlook what is really dangerous here. The streetcar authority isn't taking their ball and going home. They are still committed to getting these extensions up and running. That means more taxes without the approval of voters or passed through these very small piecemeal measures in tiny districts. Right here in KC we're dealing with voter suppression on a very big scale because the streetcar is not playing fairly with voters.

  8. Why don't they just charge a fare for the streetcar? That would pay for the extension right there. The bus pays for a big percentage of it's funding by collecting fees, it's time for the streetcar to do the same.

  9. This was always just a folly trolly for the tourists. No real value nothing but phony numbers and parties for the press.

    ReplyDelete
  10. But what about gopher boy's momentum for the city? I thought everyone loved the streetcar. Apparently, not the people who have to evaluate it objectively.

    ReplyDelete
  11. ^^^ That whole "momentum" idea is just a lie. Was downtown tonight and I saw far more people riding scooters than on the streetcar.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The streetcars are a legacy of the Obama Administration. It's time to let it go and get out of the past. The more these people push to come up with stupid schemes, the more desperate they seem.

  13. ^^^ +100

Let's get working on those flying cars. That's the only real "solution" to keep KC Safe.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't know about flying cars but electric buses would be a much better solution.

  15. This is awesome news. No money Sly you blew it. HA HA HA HA HA! K.C. doesn't deserve federal money!

  16. Save The Plaza12/18/18, 9:10 PM

    ^^ That's for sure.

Maybe now we can keep this thing from going down to the plaza and making the problems even worse. I agree with some of the comments here about charging a fare. Why should we expect business and taxpayers to subsidize the streetcar when riders aren't willing to pay their fair share.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The next route should be right up Sly’s fat lard ass.

  18. this is what the per k tax for little kids is for

    ReplyDelete
  19. Not another dime on this thing until they hold a real election across the city. The last time they asked for money they were shut down.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The Federal Transportation Agency gave KCMO taxpayers a very good early Christmas present and city hall a lump of coal. City hall can burn the lump of coal for their energy.

Well done 9:43 as you have seen through the smoke and mirrors.

  21. They cant charge riders and they know it. If they did, then there would be actual numbers for people using it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. lol. the street car is fucked and was fucked from the beginning but midtown people wanted to live in a cute little city with a street car for no reason other than to just say they do

    ReplyDelete
  23. A lot of good comments above. I would only echo that the streetcar is silly as a transit idea and hugely expensive. If the riders would pay a fare then ridership would fall to almost nothing. If a big fat federal check showed up well ok that's one thing, but sucking money from local pockets is absurd. Like mentioned above, there was no citywide election & I think"rail fail" analysis above is exactly right.

  24. How come street car and light rail projects are working so well in places like Minneapolis, Denver and Salt Lake City? Salt Lake City will surpass KC one day as a city in terms of economic power and density
