TKC SUNDAY SPECIAL!!! KANSAS CITY BLUE WAVE 2019 PRIORITIES REVEALED!!! CITY HALL TOUTS LOCAL INTERNETS TAX, OBAMACARE COMEBACK & FUNDING 'UNDOCUMENTED' IMMIGRATION REFORM!!!
Emboldened after midterm election victory by the Democratic Party, Kansas City has laid out a progressive agenda for 2019.
To wit . . .
FIRST ON TKC we highlight some of the more interesting aspects of the City Hall plan for the New Year which determines the course for local lobbyists and politicos in dealing with regional Congressional, Senate and State House Representatives.
The info is out there but local news downplays this decidedly left wing agenda from 12th & Oak.
First and foremost, here's how KCMO politicos view our place in the nation . . .
Establishing the City of Kansas City’s legislative priorities and positions on matters that may come before the 116th United States Congress in 2019.
The resolution sponsored by Councilman Kevin McManus & Councilmember Jolie Justus documents "general statements of City Hall priorities and positions on matters that may become the subject of or be affected by proposed federal legislation."
First and foremost for our our blog community . . .
12TH & OAK PLANS INTERNETS SALES TAX FOR KANSAS CITY!!!
Here's the scary line that looks to take another swipe at local income with an unpopular measure that has garnered opposition throughout the nation:
"Internet Sales Tax. Support legislation that protects the City’s ability to collect an Internet sales tax."
And then, fighting for Obamacare is now part of the KCMO plan for the future:
KCMO LOVES OBAMACARE!?!?!
Check the note from elected officials on the old school remedy whilst the masses are now talking the single-payer option:
"Affordable Care Act and State Children’s Health Insurance Program Funding. Support the full funding of the Affordable Care Act and State Children’s Health Insurance Program."
Finally, on the national front . . .
CITY HALL DEMANDS COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM!!! COUNCIL DESPERATELY SEEKING FEDERAL FUNDING FOR DREAMERS AND THE RAPIDLY APPROACHING CARAVAN!!!
Check the language from council chambers . . .
"Immigration Reform. Support extension of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and comprehensive reform of current immigration laws to allow undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States to earn legal status and apply for citizenship."
Sadly, what we see from this list is even more troubling . . .
AMID ANOTHER DEADLY YEAR FOR KANSAS CITY AND DESPITE THE CURRENT BLOODY CHRISTMASTIME CRIME SPREE . . . CITY HALL PUTS FUNDING FOR PUBLIC SAFETY LAST ON THE PRIORITY LIST!!!
Notice the dearth of new ideas when it comes to fighting crime in the urban core and more money sought for programs that don't seem to be working:
"Anti-Violence Funding. Support increased anti-violence funding for grants that will assist the Kansas City No Violence Alliance and the City’s Aim4Peace Program and pursue funding for initiatives that will reduce violent crime in Kansas City."
In Missouri, priorities for KCMO are far less ambitious but still deserve mention . . . Take a look:
Establishing the City of Kansas City’s legislative major priorities and positions on matters for the 2019 session of the Missouri General Assembly.
More than anything the upcoming elections seem to focus on garnering independence from the GOP hegemony in Jeff City:
FIGHTING FOR LOCAL CONTROL OF KCPD WILL DOMINATE 2019!!!
The subtext of this policy priority really applies to police:
"Preemption. Oppose any efforts to undermine local control for Kansas City, including any new state requirement or state budget decision that does not include adequate state funding."
Not to be outdone, KCMO wants to protect their greatest source of revenue . . .
KANSAS CITY WANTS THE EARNINGS TAX EXTENDED FOR TWO MORE DECADES!!!
Here's the money grab that mostly targets Johnson County visitors to our not-so-biz-friendly town:
"Earnings Tax. Oppose any effort to undermine the Earnings Tax and support the extension of the Earnings Tax renewal period from 5 years to 20 years."
And finally in Missouri . . .
THERE'S A BIG PUSH FOR THE KCMO INTERNETS TAX IN 2019!!!
More info and insight on this proposal . . .
"Sales and Use Tax Parity (e-commerce). In the wake of South Dakota v. Wayfair Inc., Chapter 144 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri should be amended to ensure that Missouri eliminates the disparity in tax rates (both sale and use; local and state) collected by in-state local businesses and out-of-state sellers, specifically ensuring the collection of tax on internet purchases."
On a final note, amid all these dramatic moves, KCMO still wants a Missouri to spend taxpayer cash on movies in order to find a happy ending to so many failed creative class careers in the Crossroads.
"Film Rebate Program. Support reinstating the Missouri Film rebate program as a tool for economic development."
And now, as always, we turn the discussion over to our blog community . . .
DO YOU SUPPORT THESE KANSAS CITY PRIORITIES FROM CITY HALL?!?!
The slate is ambitious but might not match the growing demand from voters that infrastructure and neighborhood issues take precedence at City Hall.
You decide . . .
