TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! ACTIVISTS TOUTING CATHOLIC PRIEST SEX ABUSE CHARGES ARGUE AGAINST SHOOK HARDY & BACON STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS DEFENSE!!!

A local law firm has entered into the fray into an evolving Catholic scandal that is now focused on bringing priests to justice years after their alleged misdeeds.

ACTIVISTS CALL OUT KANSAS CITY'S BIGGEST LAW FIRM FOR THEIR STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS DEFENSE!!!

Here's the word FIRST on TKC . . .

"KC-based lawyers at Shook Hardy & Bacon are defending what child advocates call "archaic, predator-friendly statutes of limitations" on a national legal blog.

"And it turns out that KC native Bishop Joseph Hart (who headed the Wyoming diocese) isn't the only predator priest from here who's spent time out west. Like Hart, Fr. Paul C. Pilgram ended up in Wyoming, according to Catholic church records released last week. (He's a Jesuit who worked at St. Francis Xavier Parish and Rockhurst University here. (Others: Fr. Thomas Cronin, now in Nevada, and Fr. Michael Brewer, now in Colorado)"

In fairness, here's the response on this topic from top ranking local legal eagles:

"Any law that erodes statutes of limitations or allows retroactive claims should be a concern, according to Cary Silverman of Shook Hardy & Bacon LLP, speaking on behalf of the American Tort Reform Association.

"The ATRA and other opponents of window bills worry that the trend could move beyond child sex abuse cases to other claims, such as personal injury or medical malpractice."

  1. Shook is arguing for their bigger clients. Doubt they really care about priests or their victims.

    1. ^^^^^^ Sort of agree, the "window" is a dangerous precedent but it's part of the law now and is the only way that these kinds of victims will get any justice.

  2. I should have become a lawyer. Rake in the big bucks.

  3. @9:32 there is no bigger client that Shook could have than the Catholic Church - it's the wealthiest entity in the World!

  4. This latest guy is a perfect example of why there needs to be a statute of limitations. There have been numerous, very public settlements for 10s of millions. This Reardon creep was in several of them. No way this "victim's" repressed memory only now kicked in after 40 years - a day after the spotlight was turned from the Catholic Church to the Baptists on a national and local scale.

    1. Good call but for many their only religion is money. That being said, there are some damn good lawyers in KC.

  6. 9:58 sometimes just having the courage to come forth and admit what happened can be a long time coming. I hid and denied for many years what an uncle did to me. In fact for the most part I still have not identified him or myself to family or the general public about what happened. I was older before knowing it was wrong and thought in time I would forget about it but never did. The uncle and the grandparents are dead now so what good would it do to expose it all now very publicly. Till you have walked in the shoes of an abused child how about keeping your ill informative comments to yourself because you have no idea what it is like to carry such a weight on your shoulders.

There should never be any statute of limitations on murder, rape or child abuse. But I don't feel a person has the right to sue a family or organization over the actions of others if convicted of a crime. Sue the person guilty maybe but most times they are such losers they have nothing to begin with.

  10. It would be malpractice for the lawyers to not raise a statute of limitations defense if it's available. Nobody gives a rip whether the activists like it or don't.

  12. Isn't it time that the victims files a class action suit against Shook, Shameless and Brazen for "aiding and abetting" in the ongoing coverup?

  13. Paul Pilgram was the Principal at Rockhurst High School. So the pedophiles got another shot at any of the kids who survived St. Elizabeth's Grade School.
