KANSAS CITY ACTIVISTS WARN OF CONTINUED DELAYS BECAUSE THEIR CONCERNS WERE OVERLOOKED!!!

Really important, EXCLUSIVE and detailed statement sent our way recently . . .

"We've been closely following KCI's environmental troubles for a decade, beginning with a 2008 court case involving historic cemeteries and unmarked graves on the airport's 53-square-miles of land.

The environmental issues confronting the new terminal have never been as simple as the airport would like everyone to believe. As supporters of the new airport, we cautioned airport management and city council members two years ago that issues related to archaeological and historical sites on airport property could cause expensive delays, if not addressed quickly and carefully. We were ignored.

We have now learned that the FAA is preparing a Programmatic Agreement for dealing with airport historic and archaeological sites. Preparation of a PA is generally undertaken in cases that are considered unusually complex, where the FAA wants to customize compliance with federal laws to the local situation. We don't know all of the provisions in the forthcoming PA or when it will be released.

We do know that will it contain provisions that require the airport to prepare a plan for handling unanticipated archaeological discoveries, including human remains, before construction can begin. How much delay his the PA caused or will it cause in the future? We don't know until we see the document. One thing seems clear, however. The airport's own figures suggest that new airport cost is inflating by millions of dollars for each month construction is delayed. Add the PA to the list of potential costly delays the airport and city are not talking about."

  1. What we're really learning here is that the mayor and the council didn't do much background research or any due diligence on the airport, they just put a blank check on the ballot. Now we're paying for it.

    1. 7 billion.

      On the low end.

    2. But I thought Gopher said we had the "momentum"

The rate of this construction isn't reflective of that.

Looks like we've got anything but momentum. It seems like this project is mired in problems and nobody agrees on the terms. I don't think we're any closer to construction then we were a year ago. It's looking very bad and I don't think Sly James will get his name on the airport afterall.

  2. Great news. Now the FAA may find Jimmy Hoffa buried or in the concrete at the airport.

  3. @4:24. The council and Slie do not have a basic understanding of due diligence or background research.

They just believe whatever developers tell them.

  4. How many more setbacks does everyone think are coming up? I’m predicting at least 5 more

  5. Agree here that the big setback is the environmental report. That is already a delay and the Mayor doesn't want to admit it.

  6. Like the city gives a shit?

They will just shovel up the corpses and dump em' in the landfill with all the rest of the debris.

  7. Airport has 53-fukn square-miles of land?? That's more than the distance from Blue Springs to the airport.

  8. Just think what would happen if someone, wink wink said it was a black peoples grave site, hoo wee, that would shut down the entire thing! How funny would that be!

    1. Some of it is.... I'm 48 and a life long resident of Platte county. A simple knowledge of the area reveals these cemeteries (only a blind person wouldn't see them).
My dear friend & his family sold the original land to the city 45+ years ago for the original footprint for KCI/MCI. He left the area & eventually the country decades ago.... Mostly because his conscience couldn't handle what he knew was coming.
Bottom line - our Mayor & our city council are making decisions not based on what is best for our constituents but what is best for them!

    2. Veronica,
Aren’t some of the graves supposed to be a slave cemetery?

  9. This is funny as heck. Sly has no business running a city. He's such a dumb ass.

  10. Airport is a mess. This might be important but it's just one small part of an even bigger debacle.

  11. Who cares about rotten corpses? Nobody ever thought about them before. And 11:22 didn't know the owners decades ago...pure bullshit.

  12. Since the new terminal will be built in the same footprint as terminal A now, wouldn't any graves have already been discovered or moved? Is terminal A haunted? Wasn't this an '80s movie?

  13. This article is so fucking stupid, the airport will be built...period..

  14. It is estimated that 4,000 people lived and died on that land. Negro slaves and Native Americans. They were buried on the land they lived on. There are graves everywhere.

  15. The current new airport plan offers no details. What a shame. There is no accountability. We need a new plan.

  16. Just remodel the old airport. Stop wasting all of this money.
