SHAME!!! KANSAS CITY FAILED TO DECIDE MLK STREET RENAME ON THE PASEO DESPITE DEBATE THROUGHOUT 2018!!!

One year of discussions and meetings have been wasted amid often contentious debate over the simple idea of honoring Civil Rights era icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a Kansas City street named in his honor.

To wit . . .

CITY COUNCIL DECIDED TO CONTINUE THE PASEO KCMO MLK RENAME DEBATE INTO 2019 WITH NO DECISION IN THIS AFTERNOON'S LAST 2018 SESSION!!!

Perspective . . .

- The Revs and a small cadre of activists brought the issue to the forefront with what is really an effort to create another racial dividing line to bolster their own fiefdoms in the urban core. Even on the East Side there is not total unanimity for The Paseo rename crusade despite the ability of this group to organize a decent sized protest for TV news cameras.

- The MLK Advisory Group represented progress on the issue. While the airport rename idea was a false start - The 63rd St. proposal has a broader coalition of support and isn't nearly as politicized as The Paseo initiative.

- The Revs & Co. reject the 63rd street alternative, in theory, because there's no measure to guarantee upkeep like the much nicer KCMO Blvd System that is cleaned up by Parks & Rec. However, their effort to force a vote has stalled because the lack of a funding mechanism and the group's unwillingness to make the finances of a ballot initiative public.

And so . .

KANSAS CITY WASTED 2018 ARGUING ABOUT AN MLK STREET INSTEAD OF UNITING TO FULFILL THE CIVIL RIGHTS LEGACY WHICH MOST RESIDENTS GENERALLY SUPPORT ON 63RD STREET - A PATH THAT WOULD CONNECT THE CITY INSTEAD OF CREATE MORE DIVISION!!!

Sadly, there wasn't any bold leadership from elected leaders on this front while the community discussion did result in a 63rd Street recommendation that brought reason to the otherwise turbulent culture war slap fight.

  1. TKC, here's another aspect that you brought up earlier and shouldn't forget.

In regard to the "funding mechanism" while a lot of taxpayers do support the street name, they don't want to get stuck paying the King family an endless supply of cash. That's why Shileds offered the MLK on the paseo solution. Unfortunatley, that went over like a lead ballon.

    1. Another issue that it will take an election to solve.

    2. Excuse me, why aren't we building a funding mechanism into the 63rd street idea to assure the upkeep of the street. It's not like people would be against that.

Hell, make it part of the blvd system. An addition.

This debate is about politics, not about getting things done.

  2. Better idea: Turn Prospect into MLK Parkway and let the new tax pay for it. Somebody needs to tell the revs NO instead of teasing them with this in order to get more votes.

  3. How about we let Cerner name thier campus after MLK in exchange for all the breaks they got.

  12. So the park and school named after this clown isn’t enough?

How much are we paying them now?

    And will we ever know?

    ReplyDelete
  13. ^^^ Damn good question. Council should disclose the amount paid to the king family before the decision is final. It's the taxpayers money.

  18. RE: - "The Revs and a small cadre of activists brought the issue to the forefront with what is really an effort to create another racial dividing line to bolster their own fiefdoms in the urban core."

Firstly, thanks for that truthful reminder.

Dr. King would be appalled at the thought of stripping an existing named street only to rename it after him. It's antithetical to his teachings and practice.

Likewise, anything that requires royalty payments to the King heirs is blasphemous heresy.

Why doesn't the Council honor Dr. King's legacy by climbing out of developer's pockets, redoubling efforts to reduce homicide/crime, and quit wasting millions of dollars on unnecessary projects like 18th and Vine, ToyTrains, and Swope Park festivals?

    I have a dream!

  19. The renaming of the Paseo to MLK and ongoing cost relating to the MLK royalty check should only be funded by creating a tax district which would run 6 blocks to the east and west of the MLK route. In addition, the City Council members who support this renaming project should automatically be included in this taxing district.

    City owned grocery store
    Street Car
    Airport
    Reduced police force, higher crime

    Failure...

The Council does not represent all of the City.

  20. Why doesn’t Rev Carwash Cleaver offer to change the name of Cleaver Blvd to MLK? It would prove that this is really a good idea, not to mention being the Christian thing to do. Remember, Reverend, pride goeth before a fall.

  22. The houses along the Paseo are actually very well kept up. Renaming the street, ironically, would, in my opinion, decrease the value of the properties.

The association with crime, murder and violence all over the US, with the name Martin Luther King Parkway, Drive, Street etc. will discourage buyers of these properties in the future.

But, what the fuck. Once the black ball of victimization gets bouncing, whitey's tax money is going to pay to get it dunked through the hoop one way or the other.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The city did decide the renaming issue in 2018. City council decided it was not worth it and therefore did not vote on it. Case closed.

The money paid to have Paseo renamed is a waste of money and it would be interesting to know how much kickback is given to the fake fat Revs if the renaming succeeded.
