Kansas City Streetcar Funding Fake News Fact Check: $3-Mil Won't Pay For Much

Cheerleaders for the toy train are touting this minor win redirecting tax cash in order to further a rigged vote.

More importantly . . .

At an estimated $16.5M per mile -- Biz Journal propaganda doesn't mention that this money will only take the controversial mode of transit a few blocks.

Here's the somewhat newsworthy update:

"The Kansas City Streetcar Authority has secured $3 million in funding for its Main Street Extension project.

"The project team, which includes the Streetcar Authority, Kansas City Area Transportation Authority and the city, held a public meeting Thursday to provide updates on the Main Street Extension and the Riverfront Expansion projects.

"The transportation development district (TDD) formed with the creation of the streetcar’s starter line will provide $2 million to fund the next phase of the Main Street expansion — on the condition that it be reimbursed from the newly formed Main Street Rail TDD.

"KCATA will fund the remaining $1 million."

  1. Never fear. I'm sure the next mayor will pass a new no vote tax for it.

  2. 16.5 million a mile? Really? Then why did the first 2.2 cost 80 million a mile? (160 mil total) The lies and thievery will never end with this group of crooks

  6. The $3 million should be used to repair some of the failing infrastructure.

  7. We could've gotten 8,000 new Cars for $160M, could've sprinkled them around town and left the keys in them.

  8. So this farce is what to hide or distract from the public all the Mercedes, Bmw's, and Cadillac's sitting in the Light Towers parking garages?

  9. The 1 million kicked in by KCATA is bad policy. They need to focus on bus transit. There have already been route cuts since streetcar. I fear a fare hike is imminent the way KCATA is hemorrhaging money.

  10. This is just the latest example of the great Ponzi scheme that KCMO government is.
Taxes, fees, and other revenue generated for a specific purpose are regularly siphoned off to pay for the latest BIG BIG thing.
That's why operations and maintenance are ignored and even appropriate staffing for critical departments like the police becomes unaffordable.
The city "borrows" money from the airport fund, utility surcharges are moved into the general fund, PIAC money is used for streetcar consulting studies, and now Sly wants a new revenue stream for "pre-K programs".
Then there's the hundreds of millions in debt.
    House of cards.
