Despite City Hall Propaganda: Downtown Kansas City Stays Losing Millennials?!?!

Our favorite local number crunchers share this alternative perspective on young people and their home buying habits. Apparently, EPIC rents and schools without accreditation haven't inspired a buy-in from people looking to start families. Take a look:

Millennials Are Buying in the Suburbs

Kansas City has been on a spending spree to try to attract millennials downtown, having been caught up in the now-discredited "creative-class" strategy originally promulgated by urbanist Richard Florida.

  3. Fads come and go, and hang around for shorter periods in the age of social media.
And renters have no skin in the game and can chase whatever they want.
But hundreds of millions in public debt drags on a community for many decades and makes it increasingly difficult to meet new challenges or take advantage of new opportunities that will arise in the future.
Sly's fantasies, hype, and fake glitz, all "funded" by debt and moving money from one account to another, will weigh on KCMO for many years to come.
Higher taxes and even worse basic services.
Of course, Sly will be long gone.
    Dig deep KCMO taxpayers!
    It never changes.

    1. Mr 6:53 am is up very early to make a very good point. This debt will be around a long time after these planners boosters politicians and developers and will stunt the city’s attraction of better more sustainable opportunities later.

Hey I love the sight of 26 year old white girls walking their little dogs in the river market or downtown as much or more as the next guy. But it’s madness to take on hundreds of millions of dollars of debt to chase after that demographic.

  5. Not me. Mom and Dad are getting me a nice loft apartment in the big city. Be good to get out of Lee's Summit, and finally enjoy avocado and toast, scooters, free wifi, and the free streetcar.

  13. Jeez, if KC sucks so bad, why does Touhey live in the city limits? He could easily move to Raytown, Grandview or Riverside and still write his hit pieces from there.

    Talk about conflicted.

  17. dismantle and sell for scrap a few large downtown limestone buildings. Coastal real estate needs that material, and the concrete of demolished terminal A, for sea walls, the extreme weather of climate change .
