THE TKC SATURDAY NIGHT PLAYLIST!!! KANSAS CITY HOLIDAY SEASON 2018 APPROACHES AMID INCREASING AMERICAN INCOME DISPARITY!!!

Just like Kansas City in general, we find ourselves in a precarious place tonight.

The holiday rush hasn't quite started but Autumn is quickly fading.

Moreover, we're confronted by two vastly differing approaches to this time of year . . .

This point on the calendar is typically when media cashes in and bombards locals with shopping encouragement and deals.

Then again, sometimes our better angels win out for control of the discourse . . .

Volunteers participate in Operation Thanksgiving on Saturday

In terms of policy, the topic of housing will continue to dominate the KCMO discourse from now until the upcoming election.

But the real conversation is much bigger, scarier and more problematic than local guv bad ideas.

Despite political chatter, spin and broken promises -- The brutal reality confronting us all: We approach another holiday season dominated by growing income disparity among Americans as the myth of social mobility proves ever more elusive.

A few important examples:

The Economist: The gap between poor and rich neighbourhoods is growing

American Prospect: Who Gets to Tell Stories About Poverty?

CGTN: Historic high income inequality pushes US voters to polls

We won't pretend to offer solutions as even this issue is seized upon by special interests to garner more support for a problem that continues to grow worse as a colder Winter approaches. What's more . . . If there is a "bright side" to this debate it's that the topic of disparity puts things in perspective and destroys typical wedge issues given that more denizens among every demographic from urban, rural, men, women, black, white, ethic and immigrants alike all find themselves on the LOSING SIDE of this equation.

And so for the late night we derive just a bit of pleasure by sharing the best from the catalogue of INXS - A group that is neither rock nor pop, not quite legendary or kitsch and is mostly excluded from local retro celebration but still holds a place near & dear to our heart and reminds us of this waypoint on the calendar.

As always, thanks for reading this week and have a safe and fun Saturday night.

  1. Think about the big picture even better. Buffet lines are the new soup lines.

    1. You want to see Kansas City really lose their sh*t, it's when we have a government shut down over border wall funding. That's where the insults and accusations get really out of control and we get a real look at how our political divisions have become. That should have been your playlist but I can see where most don't want to think about that impending disaster given that the KC area has so many government employees who are scared of what happens when the shutdown takes hold.

    Tremendous film.

  6. Why do we need a shut down? Trump promised Mexico would pay for the wall. Go get the money from them.

But this thread is about Trump's biggest broken promise. The rigged economy that left workers behind. Trump was supposed to fix it. Yet the trade deficit has gotten bigger, inflation is up, the tax cuts went to corporations and rich families.

Trump took the rigged economy and made it worse. The gap between rich and poor is growing wider than ever. It's why he is back to big talk about the fake invasion again and deploying troops for no reason. He's failed on the economy.

  7. 5:25 trump made it better for everybody that has a job, those freeloaders getting free gubmint money are the ones that better watch out, they were making more money than people with lower and some mid level jobs and that’s been coming to an end, Barry created that mess and now trump is making it right, nothing was more unfair then busting your arse forty hours a week and making less money then people on welfare. I personally have seen my income improve to before Barry screwed things up, I’m happy again that I can buy food, clothing and gas for my car. If you people can’t see that go eff yourself.

  8. I am rich and stingy, so, fuck all of you losers.

  9. 6:11: Revisionist history is always fun, but do you remember what the economy was like when Obama took office?

    ReplyDelete
  10. What I remember was I had a lower level job and could still afford food, clothes and gas, I had a better job during the Barry years and could barely feed me and my young daughter, yes, I am the rare man that raised a daughter by himself, everything went through the roof, gas was at or near $4.00 a gallon and a gallon of milk was $5.00, I do remember 6:55, I do

  11. 6:34 losers whine and mooch from the rich, screw’em all!

  12. Do not care what anybody claims but Obama did start this 2 year booming economy. He did that by leaving office.

  13. Some of you Trump bashers are hilarious. remember when Obama shut down the Gov. and he shut the White House tours down.....those guys who give tours are volunteers, and he also shut down private business. Now that was how evil he was.
6:55 The economy when Obama took office went from bad to worse he caused small business to close caused thousands of lay offs, funded terrorists, caused racial divide, opened the boarders, doubled the debt. and said for us to get over the fact that ours jobs were gone. Oh and sat in church and chanted God Damn America!

  14. The income issue has numerous variables. A lot of it is poor white women who turn into mud sharks in high school. This results in single moms with mixed babies and no father. No income and the welfare state in action. All you have to do is go to gas stations in places like independence, Gardner, Lee’s summit, and leavenworth. Look around when waiting in line to pay for something. It’s not just mudsharks. It’s also just plain ol white trash. The kind of women who sleep with dudes that have junk tattoos, raggedly clothes, and shitty half ass beards. The kids are having kids. Single mom households are breeding grounds for anger and perverse ways. I’m not saying single mom situations are 100% you are screwed but let’s be honest about it.

Education is an issue as well. There are some groups on Facebook that have people making posts that are embarrassing. Misspelling simple words that you want to excuse as a typo, but when you click their profile you see that it’s not a typo. They are that stupid.

    Tide pods.

  15. 8:27: You don't have to be a Trump basher to acknowledge that Obama inherited a messy economy and helped us get through a rough time. You just have to have a memory and be at least a little objective.

Giving Obama some credit does not detract from what Trump may or may not have accomplished.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Give Obama credit for what? Apologizing for America around the world, dividing the races further, giving boat loads of money to Iran to fuel their nuclear aspirations, running up the debt, spying on Trump's campaign, and siding with Black Lives Matter. Maybe you're right, he does deserve 100% credit for all those things.

    ReplyDelete
  17. So Obama was unmitigated evil and Trump is our redeemer? Is that what they're teaching on Fox News these days?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Flip off all Mercedes drivers until new years, you'll feel better.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Does this mean I have to get rid of mine?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Damn good stuff!

might not change the world but made me think for just a second.

    ReplyDelete
  21. This is America. If you want to do better work harder. I'm sick of all this attempted incitement of class Warfare from a generation that doesn't even know what work is.

I got no problem with somebody getting help from Social Services to get back on their feet. But once back on your feet use them to get your ass to work. Or don't cry to me
