Domestic violence experts: Protection orders require additional security measures

The murder of a Kansas City woman could be a cautionary tale for victims of domestic violence, because the victim had an order of protection in her pocket when she was found dead. The object of 40-year-old Tabitha Birdsong's court order is also the suspect in her death, estranged husband Gene Birdsong.

  1. An order of protection is as useful as a gun free zone sign. Orders and signs are only as good as the people who will honor them, which is every law-abiding citizen. Orders of protection and gun-fee zone signs are 100% ignored by criminals and those who don't care about the rule of law in society. An order of protection is a legal tool enabling the victim to have recourse in case the target breaks the protective order, but it in no way shields the victim from from harm from someone who is determined to harm the victim. The one thing the liberal, stupid article left out is self protection. No mention of weapons of any kind, including sprays, tasers, or guns, any of which could have been used to at least distract the attacker, or even incapacitate. If you have an order of protection due to violence, you'd be well served to protect yourself in a manner that can incapacitate the attacker at a distance. Remember that sprays can be turned against you and that tasers may not be effective through clothing. Liberals would have the woman and her children be defenseless. Luckily, in Missouri, and so far, Kansas, victims have the right to purchase, carry, and even conceal without jumping through the legal hoops that criminals just ignore in other states. This should have been a defensive gun use article.

  3. Yea a woman files a protection order, her next stop should be gun shop and range for practice and instruction. A piece of paper is not going to stop anyone who wants to do harm.

  6. Protection orders stop wife beaters about as effectively as gun control laws stop criminals, but that doesn't stop the anti gun nuts does it?

  7. How about making violation of a Protective Order a Capital Crime?
Might not eliminate the problem, but it would reduce recidivism a lot!
