Kansas City Star Discovers Gentrification

Higher rents start to hit the East side as well . . . Here's the newspaper sleepy Sunday special that was mostly ignored and full of complaints over a trend that's nearing it's end along with the bull market. Read more:

KC's lack of affordable housing plan evident in Troost growth | The Kansas City Star

For decades, Troost Avenue has been Kansas City's shorthand for separation: east from west, black from white, poverty from opportunity. That partition, a legacy of government policies that promoted discrimination and neglect, is dissolving. A wave of economic development, pushing for years from the west, has broken through.

  1. Don't have kids until you can afford them. Get a job, any job, and KEEP that job. Chances are you'll get promoted, earn raises, etc. Put money aside... it's life skills these folks need, not subsidies. I'm not suggesting you'll live a glamorous life working lower end service and manufacturing jobs, but you will have self respect, self reliance, and you'll feel good about yourself. Take care of your own shit. That should be everyone's motto: taking care of my own shit.

  2. The usual blabber from the Star about tax breaks, subsidies, city regulations, and all the rest, but not even a mention of the critical importance of getting the crime and violence under some control.
A safe neighborhood is the basic foundation of anything else and building without one will result in failure every time.
Just the same old thing, over and over again.

  3. Linda Benson is right! Who are they building it up for? I drive by Ruby Jeans and every time there is no one in there, or maybe one or two people how can you survive on one or two people?

The project at Troost and Armour is a disaster waiting to be built because the Mayor didn't make the developers provide parking so the folks in Central Hyde Park are going to have a huge problem, with parking and the bike lane has already caused trouble, you can't see to pull out on Armour until you're out in the middle of the street. When you go back off of Troost you still have blight, all this is doing is pushing this back one block.

Crime in Kansas City is extremely high and the schools are not only bad but they take way to much money from the tax payer for nothing. Everyone sends their kids to private schools. Cutting back on police officers was a bad move too. Call the police in the afternoon on a weekday and you will be put on hold.

Horrible streets, bad infrastructure, and the developers will come out ahead because they can write off any apartments or store fronts they don't rent as a loss. When this city voted for Sly James you lost big time!

  7. And get rid of the whites with their flags hanging on the porch and their charcoal barbecue grills in the front yard please. Yuck, it's disgusting and deplorable.

  8. Oh no! What do we do? I mean this doesn’t concern me in the least, but it’s cold and I’m alone. I need to complain about this too. Why are we mad agin? I forget.

  9. There's a lot going on between umkc and rockhurst-some surprising signs of life and active commerce, although I did see that blue star motorcycle had a sign saying they moved to a Truman road location. Troost is a wide commercial thoroughfare on an easy grade, well drained. City forefathers did well and it's only a matter of time before it comes back strong.

  10. This isn't that great of an article. There needs to be money put into this area and people will protect their investments and this will lead to a better place to live with higher rents. That is how the world works and you can fight reality but you'll always lose.

The alternative is to have a situation like 18th and vine where almost 100 million has been dumped into the area by tax subsidies and handouts and the place has gotten worse

Isn't it amazing how nice things are where the White People live and work, and, when there's no White People, how dangerous, filthy, and gross that part of town is ?
