Kansas City Opposition Against MLK Rename Ram Through On The Paseo Intensifies

Credit where it's due . . . MAYOR SLY JAMES IS THE LEADING CRITIC OF THE REVS & ACTIVIST EFFORTS TO RENAME THE PASEO DESPITE COMMUNITY OPPOSITION and the reality is that there's much more support behind the 63rd street initiative . . . TKC suggestion . . . Why can't we convert 63rd to a Blvd and put it under Parks & Rec authority as well???

Here's the latest round-up and another two week delay:

KCMO leaders still undecided on renaming The Paseo for MLK

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A heated debate broke out at City Hall in Kansas City, Missouri as leaders discussed ways to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. There is a new name on the table for The Paseo: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on The Paseo.

  1. We should not be naming any thing after any negro.

    1. Why not? We name things for the people who owned negroes e.g. Washington DC and Jackson County...

Your hard cracker resentment must make you miserable living in a country with fifty million black people.

    2. What was so bad about owning Negroes? You act like that’s a bad thing.

    3. Well stop commenting under an anonymous post your name so your white counter parts can fire your punk ass... Rename Swope or Myer or JC Nichols all white supremacist... I would love to read the racist comments after that... Kc is still a very racist city, just read comments on tkc going back 5 years... It will make you believe it's a underground kkk chapter around here... Them oath keepers

  5. I have yet to hear an argument for this that is compelling. There are actual issues that will help the community, no matter race, that should be taken on. Better schools, sewers, safety. This is such a bad look for the city. The paseo is iconic and pays homage to our latino and latinx community and it's not right to turn a blind eye to them

  6. @10:21 The Paseo has NOTHING to do with homage to the Latino's in our city!!!!!

Kessler named it after a Blvd. in Mexico because of it's main thoroughfare through a city and he wanted that for K.C. when that area was underpopulated back in the early 1900's. It had to do with infrastructure not the people!

To rename it is a waste of money and erases some of the history that people like Kessler did. It's unnecessary to change the name or to use MLK when our city has bigger issues to fix because of Sly James and the dysfunctional city Admin.

Don't forget MLK's family charges money every year for the use of his name. I think some of the black people in this city are extra racist like Lucas get over it!!

    1. Absolutely correct thank you for the factual comments... If we're going to change it it should be changed to the Paseo Del Norte meaning the past of the North which is what it is

  7. Maybe we could just say our county is named after Michael Jackson?

  8. Or we could entice the team back from Sacramento and call them the Kansas City Martin Luther Kings.

  9. How much are we already paying the king family for naming a park after mlk on blue pkwy and woodland and a elementary school on woodland (next to Paseo high school by the way, does that name change too?) for naming rights already? Is that cost already buried in the budget every year where no one can find it? Or know about it?

  10. Why don’t we name something after James Earl Ray? He was very heroic.

  15. It seems an empty gesture to name a street in the ghetto for MLK. It would be more fitting and sincere to honor him with a road or airport in a more central location.

    1. Maybe in Memphis or Birmingham or some city with which King was affiliated. He had nothing to do with KC and has no need to be memorialized with a street, airport, etc. Drop it and move on.
