The Kansas City Police Department is investigating the wreck, which has left at least one person with critical injuries.

It happened shortly after 11 a.m. in the 5000 block of E. Gregory Blvd.

According to a statement from the office of Emanuel Cleaver, the congressman was on his way to a meeting and happened to drive up to the scene of the head-on crash shortly after it happened.

"Like other drivers had done," the statement said, "the Congressman got out of his car and immediately rushed to the scene to help."

As he got closer, he saw there was a man who was unconscious behind the wheel of one of the cars and that there was a fire spreading across the engine block quickly.

Cleaver then joined three other bystanders in pulling the man to safety.

Good for him. That is commendable. Now he needs to work on funding for more border security and the wall. That would keep even more people safe.

Did any of you ever get up the stairs leading out of Mommy's Basement?

That's great but he's still a loser.

He helped other people pull the driver out......... kind of a play on words there, thank god the whole car didn’t catch fire or that would have been real bad

I have followed his congressional career, so I know he is familiar with a train wreck. Think of all of the people he has helped kill/maim with those stoplights on Bruce R. Watkins (US 71).

The guy who wears the superman suit was on the scene first.

Hopefully he did not take any inappropriate photos and post them on social media as prosecutor Baker does not approve of this behavior.

Actually helping to save the crackhead is more work than he has ever done in Congress.

Yeah can we move on with it now so I don't get sick coming here and seeing Cleavers mug shot.

His next heroic act? Free car washes for the victim’s next car, courtesy of the taxpayers.

@4:29 - Actually, some really great info. The disaster that is I-71 can more directly be attributed to Cleaver and his lack of leadership that has cost many lives. I'm glad he helped save some guy but doing a good job would be even better for a larger group of people.

Wow, it looks like his fur got singed by the fire.

Check the driver's wallet, $20 says his cash and credit cards are missing now.
