Appointment Only: Kansas Needs Special Elections For Resignations

Important tidbit reveals one of many ways that direct Democracy is thwarted in the Sunflower State. Take a look:

In Kansas, resigning lawmakers not replaced by voters | The Wichita Eagle

A quarter of Kansas lawmakers first entered the Legislature without being elected, under a system Kansas shares with just a handful of states. Three Kansas Senate seats will be vacated after the senators won statewide offices. More legislative seats may become vacant soon if other lawmakers resign to join Gov-elect Laura Kelly's administration.

  1. One of the major duties of a precinct committeeman or committeewoman is to fill vacancies in elective offices. I have been a Republican committeewoman for a number of years, and I have decided on two county offices (sheriff and county prosecutor), a state senator, a state representative, and a state school board member. Elected committee members of the party that held the office select the new officeholders. It is rare in Johnson County for Dems to able to select a new officeholder, but almost every Republican committee member who has been in office for a while will have this task. There are many, many committee precinct slots that are vacant.

If you want to know who your committeewoman or committeeman is, go to the Johnson County Election Office website. They are listed there. If you do not have one in your precinct, please consider running in August of 2020.
