TKC TOLD YOU SO!!! KANSAS CITY ART EVENT 'OPEN SPACES' CONCERT MOSTLY EMPTY FOR THE ROOTS LAST NIGHT!!!

Sadly, just as we predicted, local media is keeping it a secret but Kansas City Internets denizens confirm our reporting on the FAILED Kansas City OPEN SPACES finale.

To wit . . .

LAST NIGHT THE ROOTS PLAYED TO A MOSTLY EMPTY STARLIGHT THEATRE AND MANY LOCAL FANS SEEMED DISAPPOINTED BY LOW TURNOUT!!!

It's not just one picture out there that confirms our reporting but many.

Here's a quick glimpse of the discourse . . .

Wide shot of empty Starlight: "This is pretty embarrassing"

Looks like only a few hundred: Getting ready for The Roots!

Another look and excuse: The cold and rainy weather kept most people away. Its like a private show up in here!

Now . . .

Open Spaces Organizers need to take the blame for this - Mid-October in Kansas City is ALWAYS COLD. Starlight as the finale venue was a silly choice and any local adult should've checked the forecast.

This event is ALREADY running a $750K deficit and last night likely only worsened the damage.

Without a vote, Kansas City taxpayers started financing this debacle to the tune of $500K. Last night's empty venue CONFIRMS this was money misspent.

And so . . .

WHAT SUCKS IS THAT OUR TKC BLOG COMMUNITY IS THE FIRST AND ONLY KANSAS CITY NEWSY SOURCE HOLDING MAYOR SLY AND CITY HALL BUREAUCRATS LIKE MEGAN CRIGGER ACCOUNTABLE!!!

Moreover . . .

THIS IS NEARLY A MILLION BUCKS WORTH OF TAXPAYER MONEY WASTED ON A FAILED CONCERT AND ARSTY GARBAGE WITHOUT ANY VOTER INPUT!!!

This is nothing less than Mayor Sly & Co playing with taxpayer funds like their own personal piggy bank as the myth of the influential "creative class" transforming Kansas City has finally been exposed as a lie.

You decide . . .

    1. Here's the kicker, the roots are a much bigge draw than Janelle MonĂ¡e. Tonight's show should be even worse, hopefully the weather will warm up a bit.

    2. The venue was garbage. KC needs better indoor concert space. If it was at The Truman the crowd would have been fire.

  3. Most of the crowd probably had free tickets from city hall connections or from radio stations.

  4. Why is taxpayer money financing bringing bands to town?Is it because they're bands that mostly appeal to black people? This is something promoters usually do, that way if they don't sell tickets THEY take the bath, not taxpayers. How does this city constantly get away with wasting money on things like the Jazz District? Why does nobody have to answer for losing money on bad decisions? People get fired for this in the real world.

  5. 1:53 pm asks how the city constantly gets away with wasting (tax) money on things like the Jazz District. Welllll, it's like this. They just DO IT. And who is going to stop them? Unless the we hold the key to the cash box or the checkbook, there is nothing we can do.

    1. Look at it this way, if they didn’t waste the money, they would steal it.

  6. Creative Class my ass.. Even Richard Florida admitted almost ten years ago he was pitching a ruse. It paid off for him off course selling it to idiot local politicos.

  8. I thought you said 250K. Now it's 750K huh?

At least keep your lies straight.

  9. The City looks at it as free money that they can spend without any consequence. Build a Grocery Store, Create a Taxing District for the Trolly, create a 15 person council to oversee the Jazz Museum......

  10. @4:31, learn to read!
The City promised them $500,000, but they've spent $750,000 more than they've been able to raise from other donations.

That's a deficit of $750,000, of which the villains at City Hall will cover $500,000 using our tax money and without our having any say in the matter.

The "liars" are not here on TKC!

  11. Showing once again, as though that was necessary, that KCMO really can't pull much of anything off well.
Even good ideas are done half-assed and have poor results, and this fiasco was anything but a good idea.
No oversight or accountability and the same names show up over and over again.
And any hope for change in the future is quickly killed by looking at the roster of clowns running for mayor and council jobs.
It's no wonder the voter turnout in KCMO elections seldom passes 10%.
    Why bother?

  21. That crowd was about as big as you'd get for the roots in most cities The problem is starlight is too big for them. It's like when sporting (Wizards) used to play at arrowhead and it looked like hardly anyone was there.

I don't know who thought this would even remotely be a good idea to hold this at starlight or even swope Park. They need to go back to the spirit fest model and have all that shit set up at liberty memorial...the art the music, maybe some carnival rides or some shit.dont know how successful it would be but I do know it would be 10xs more successful there than swope
