In Defense Of Kansas City Open Spaces

In fairness, here's a completely pathetic, misleading and inane argument for an artsy festival that cost KCMO more than +$750K and counting . . .

An Optimist's View: Open Spaces KC

Sometimes we're in such a hurry to see the art that we don't see of the art. It takes several days to see everything in Open Spaces , spread across the Kansas City metropolitan area, running through October 28. I've seen Michael Rees' inflatables at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, site-specific installations by Ebony G.

  1. Yeah, ok . Well worth the $500,000 wasted by Sly on the 100 or so faggots that enjoyed it.

  2. @ 7:03, $500,000 is what the City said it would give them, but they've already spent $750,000, and haven't raised anything significant from outside sources, so we taxpayers are stuck for the balance.

  3. Watching people struggle with opioid addiction while children play in piles of trash and sidewalks don't get built FORCED that the city spend $750,000 on an arts festival.

This is an orgy of failure that appears purposefully designed to piss in the fact of the city's conservative residents. It is as if the liberals running the city want everyone to know that they can do whatever they want whenever they want and no one can stop them.

I blame the conservative residents for being too lazy to care. Death by a thousand fails as the debt refinancing is going to doom this city. Oh well, there will be bargains at the tax sales I guess....

  4. I just can’t get into “the arts” scene in KC. It’s just too weird and too many weirdos. A lot of hipsters using hipster language to describe things. If I see some art and it’s good I will appreciate it, but all too often I see something I could have done myself or better and the artists is way too proud of their work.

It would be more interesting to go to a mental hospital on a “first Friday” and tour a hallway of all the patients artwork. Now THAT would be interesting. I could use my penis to paint some distorted color blobs all over a canvas and Westport hipster would find it so amazing.

  5. Might work, @8:46, if you had a penis!
(Here's a hint - only Doctors and women use that word.)

  6. @ 846 - Thanks for telling the world where you either live or belong.

  7. This festival only enriched one particular family in Johnson County. Same family has a history of ripping off people with their fringe way of thinking. Open Spaces was bill as being at Swope Park and set up to compete with several annual festivals. Bad plan, big loss, sorry KCMO taxpayers that actually give a shit.

  9. No seriously 9:24 I could put on my display of paintings and take it to one of these art events and it would be deemed so progressive and open minded. I would dip my manhood into different colored paint jars and whirl it around like a helicopter on the canvas in a messy rage that is reflected in how the paint is splattered in no coherent pattern.

The festival goers would nod their head in agreement when I describe this artsy talent and would call my work accepting diversity because deep inside I’m really a lesbian trapped in a mans body.

  10. @ 10"51 You could jerk off while your junk is dipped in pink paint and that splat could gain you millions! Title that work "Male Menstuation".

  11. The only art show I've been to is the one in downtown Lee's summit. There was legit creative, skilled artwork on display and sale. Unfortunately, though I completely understand, the prices for the good pieces were prohibitive for me. Though one dude had a time lapse showing his painting, took 40ish hours, asking price worked out to only 25/ hour or so. Hard to eat on that.
