Football season officially starts today in Kansas City amid an exceptionally contentious midterm election season that threatens to spill onto the field where an untested team hopes to make this more than a rebuilding year.
Accordingly . . .
CHECK THE TOP FIVE REASONS POLITICS AND THE CULTURE WAR THREATEN TO RUIN THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS 2018 FOOTBALL SEASON!!!
Credit to UpRoxx for that EPIC image up top that openly mocks Prez Trump's influence over every aspect of American life like some kind of TV game show false prophet.
Checkit:
The National Anthem Protest Debate Isn't Over
The NFL has refused to implement a tougher national anthem protest policy this year. President Trump has picked up resounding support for his criticism of the league and its players and, yes, viewership and attendance have declined in the midst of the debate.
Kansas City Chiefs Ruined Tailgating
Without question . . . FANS HATE THE NEW TAILGATING POLICY INSTITUTED BY THE CHIEFS. This issue might not seem overtly political but let's analyze the problem from a consumer advocacy perspective. The Chiefs have decimated a tradition that powered a cottage industry and endeared the team to an entire community. Even worse, many of these fans now find themselves in opposition to the organization . . . The lack of political skill with which this issue was handled was stunning and will undoubtedly impact the team's ability to hold onto its fan base. Moreover, Jackson County earns the bulk of those tailgating parking fees and might suffer from the cash hit at a time when the Courthouse definitely needs the money and allegiance to the team from politicos is in a constant state of flux.
Fortnite Is More Fun Than Football
For those who don't know . . . Fortnite an open-world survival game, in which players collect resources, make tools and weapons, and try to stay alive as long as possible. Young men and women have made the video game a $300-MILLION-PER-MONTH industry that has earned loyal fans who are much more immersed in their hobby than so many locals who zone out and watch a bunch of jocks batter their brains out. Again, this might not seem overtly political but the disparity between young vs. old speaks to a GENERATION GAP that increasingly confront football teams.
So-Called "Deplorable" Fans Still Hate The Chiefs
Even before deadly parking lot beat downs, Chiefs games haven't been a place for families for a long time. In fact, the games are mostly dominated by older, white dudes with a decent bit of disposable money who don't want to even consider any political opposition . . . At the risk of stereotyping, this same demographic is usually identified as a typical Prez Trump voter. And so, given increasing controversy, limits on political expression overall and the otherwise divisive climate around the NFL -- These fans are not only opting out but also becoming angrier and less fun to be around ... Which is actually worse.
No Criticism Of The NextGen QB Allowed
The new QB Patrick Mahomes is a smart and gifted athlete but the young man is also a member of the "participation trophy" generation. Notice that over the past few years QBs have been protected from a great deal of criticism from both fans and corporate media. Old school football watchers might remember a time when QBs literally had to stay out of the public eye the week after a bad game for fear that some jerk might try and start a fight. Things have changed and for better or worse, the life of an NFL QB is no longer dominated by soul crushing criticism. During the pre-season the hype for Mr. Mahomes was insufferable and it's doubtful that anything but unwavering support will be allowed by mainstream media outlets.
And so . . .
The Kansas City Chiefs stand at the precipice of a cultural shift. We can only hope that a successful, winning season will distract fans from the culture war but, sadly, it's more likely that even a brief Sunday respite from the world of politics is no longer possible in this divisive climate as the fate of the nation and the world hinges on Midterm elections.
You decide . . .
8-8 most likely.
ReplyDelete9-7 would be a super bowl team as far as most of us are concerned.
I think the 2nd item is more important here. The Chiefs really don't understand how much they've alienate fans with the tailgating issue. It's not politics, it's just bad business and telling some of your very best customers to hit the road. That's a problem for most people and they will see a big decline in their ratings and viewership because of it.
DeleteAgree somewhat, I think the problem is that people in general have a lot more options than just watching football on Sunday. There are a lot more things to do and video games is just one problem. From social media to travel. People aren't stuck at home on Sundays any longer and so the market share for the NFL will continue to decline.
DeleteNike bet wrong. They're going down with a sinking ship. The sports branding culture went out of style in the 90s. Younger people don't care about brand names that much any more, it's a desperate move and even the Chiefs mean a lot less to young people in Kc than they used to.
ReplyDeleteWrong. You obviously are old and have no kids. Kids today wear branded clothes 24/7. It’s all they care about. Maybe don’t comment on things you have zero clue about! Stick to Matlock and loneliness. You won’t sound so foolish that way.
DeleteScrew the Chiefs
ReplyDeleteWrong. Screw the CHOKES
DeleteDamn dude, let them play at least one game before you say the season is over.
ReplyDeleteYes, there are some tough challenges to meet but I'd rather have hope in Mahomes for a winning QB than stay with Alex Smith who was just okay.
There are a few things that need to happen before the Chiefs are playoff quality but it's not that bad. The defense is solid at most spots and if the O-line can give Patrick Mahomes just a little bit of time, I think he's going to impress a lot of people this year.
Maybe but you'd still have the Russian tratior trumpers angry about everything including their wasted lives.
DeleteHes a Raiders fan and their seasons are also usually over before they start.
DeleteThey suck. Overpaid ingnorant thugs paid
DeleteSo do you. You seem mad bro? Nobody to talk to on this beautiful Sunday? No friends want you to come over and watch the game? That’s it! That’s the ticket! Maybe if you weren’t such a worthless, bitter busted loser, you would have plans today!
DeletePolitics aside, it’s a real downer when a bunch of common thugs are idolized by fan worship.
ReplyDeleteFor who? You? Grow up chump. Nobody idolizes these players. That’s childish. A lot of us have family and friends that we watch the games with. That’s what we look forward to. You sound bitter and lonely.
DeleteWhatever. If your friends and family made other plans you’d be eaten up on the inside because a GAME was happening and you were missing out. That’s fan worship. And if lonely means having zero interest in the NFL, consider me deserted on an island.
DeleteSitting on your ass playing video games is much more productive then sitting on your ass watch television.
ReplyDeleteScientific fact
Westport fart festival is pretty good this year.
ReplyDeleteNobody goes to that uppity fair, that ranks right up there with the loser chefs
ReplyDeleteWrong. I went yesterday, it was packed! Kelly’s was jam packed with an Iowa State party and the streets were full. What you meant to say you don’t go and that’s great, because you would’ve fucked it up. Stay shut-in Maude, the world goes on without you.
Delete@9:19, Nike may have bet wrong as you say, and they may be going down like a sinking ship as you say, but that sinking ship's common stock is up 53.27% for the year as of Friday's close - maybe you'd better tell the NASDAQ Market they're failing rather than posting your vast quantity of knowledge here.
ReplyDeleteAre you trying to play stockbroker again?
Delete"Hey, investors. I know that we've blundered on a hugely risky ad campaign utilizing a polarizing and unrelatable figure. And yes, our stock price has yet to recover from this decision as any idiot can see in a market that most people see as riding for some kind of near-term bearish adjustment. But we're up on the year guys! Guys??"
Never change, keyboard Warren Buffett. :)
^^^^ Nike online sales up 31% over last weekend when they announced Kaepernick as face of ad campaign. Sorry retard, Nike knows what it’s doing. You have no narrative here. The drop in stock price is wholly insignificant now.
DeleteI love it! So online sales are more important than stock price. In other words, the overall valuation of your company is insignificant if you sell a few more shoes over a few days.
DeleteKeep it up! You're funny when you try to use google to understand finance. :)
Politics didn't ruin football or cause it's decline that's something that has been caused solely by the players themselves and the owners.
ReplyDeleteExcept, and this is key here retard, football isn’t really declining at all. It’s still the most popular sport in America by a wide margin. Tv ratings are through the roof every year. 32 of the 40 most watched tv programs were NFL games so there’s that, and with all this “controversy” the NFL still made tons of money last year. Each owner gets a check for 60 million dollars each year before one ticket is sold. So yea, stupid Dave, it’s in decline. You’re a talking monkey!
DeleteA white police woman shot & killed an unarmed black man a couple of days ago. She claims she entered the wrong apartment. That doesn't explain why she shot him. "I was never so scared in all my like" is the universal refrain. Being afraid of black men is not sufficient reason to kill them in cold blood.
ReplyDeleteThis has to stop, & anyone who can't see the pattern has to stop.
Any black NFL player who doesn't take a knee, has no self-respect.
^^^^^^^^^^^Oh shut the fuck up you fucking idiot. GD it was so nice not seeing your ignorant comments.
ReplyDeletespoiled brats all.
ReplyDeleteEnough bLIEron, what is this like number four for the year? Come back at the end of the year when they have actuall proof of a cop blatantly blasting anyone, you always cry wolf before the facts are known, do us all a favor and wait for the facts like the rest of us, god you’re an idiot. I thought you were white? Why aren’t you screaming about the fact that a white person has a nearly four times chance of getting shot by a cop, as usual you fail to mention the whole story, white guilt is over dumbass so STFU.
ReplyDeleteByron how many unarmed white people were killed by an armed black man the past week?
ReplyDeleteHow many armed black men killed another black man the past week.
Now please go crawl back into whatever hole you crawled out of you illiterate asshole.
Nope @11:36, 30 years of "playing Stockbroker" was plenty!
ReplyDeleteJust thought some of Tony's readers might understand the difference between "fundamentals" and "fluctuations", but I see I was wrong in some instances.
Go ahead little one, peddle your own economic theories, but in the meantime don't lose track of your shoeshine box.
Oh, sure you were. 30 whole years! Yep, you just ooze credibility. Are you having fun looking up terms online and pretending to know what you're talking about? Because it's fun to watch.
DeleteKeep it up, and throw in some more fake stuff next time, your act needs work. ;)
Nike is for black people only, duh
ReplyDelete12:17 Super Dave isn't stupid. In fact once again he is right.
ReplyDeleteNFL TV Ratings Down Roughly 10% From Last Season. The average NFL game was viewed by 14.9 million people, down from 16.5 million last season. Overall NFL ratings for this season dropped by 9.7% compared to last season, according to data released by Nielsen on Thursday.Jan 4, 2018
Sports Illustrated said;
Overall NFL ratings for this season dropped by 9.7% compared to last season, according to data released by Nielsen on Thursday. This represents and even bigger slide than the 8% dip in ratings from 2015 to 2016. Virtually every noteworthy NFL game program saw its viewership decline. NBC's Sunday Night Football dropped from 20.323 million to 18.175 million, ESPN's Monday Night Football from 11.390 million to 10.757 million and Thursday Night Football (which aired on NFL Network as well as CBS or FOX) from 12.438 million to 10.937 million.
And yet, it still accounted for 32 of the top 40 tv shows! Hey stupid Dave all forms of tv are down across the board. It has nothing to do with football and more to do with cord cutting. You didn’t put that part in on your cut and paste job stupid Dave. I would say you were being disingenuous stupid Dave, but I’m quite sure you have no idea what that means.
DeleteOh snap! Ho Lee Fuk, you got knocked the fuck out!!!!!!!!! Bwhaaaaa
Delete1:35, you do know everyone can tell you're applauding your own posts, right?
DeleteHoly fuck! Ho Lee Fuk got punk ass shut the fuck down!
DeleteRatings are down. That's not an argument you will win. They're shown on broadcast tv, which does not require cable so there is no cord cutting. A 10 percent drop in viewership is significant when dealing with numbers this size. Even a 1-2 percent is huge. Networks spend an ungodly amount of money for the rights to broadcast. ESPN pays $2 Billion a year for the rights to broadcast ONE game a week. Then there's CBS, NBC, and FOX who all have their own separate contracts with the NFL which are pretty close to the same size, if not higher. Even if you have the most viewed show of the week, the network still has to make up the amount it pays in rights to broadcast it, plus the cost of broadcasting the games, hiring a hundred people per game ever week, and we're talking another $100 million a year on top of that. The financial models were built on growth or stability and NFL rating, while still very good are trending downward and pace unlike it's ever seen.
ReplyDeleteThe NFL is not actively going against its fans and making it less convenient to go to games too, which brings bad will throughout the league. They've monkeyed around with this anthem thing for three years now and it's only gotten worse for them. They need a resolution one way or anything because it's just sort of eroding everything.
Anyway, thanks for reading my blog post
Hey dumb ass, ratings are down on everything! I think that’s the point of 1:26’s post. It’s not just football! It’s awards shows, nightly news, prime time tv..,everything! It is cord cutting too because millennials and the younger generation do not watch broadcast tv period! Jesus, read something, watch something other than Faux News! You’re dismissed!
ReplyDeleteWalking it back, huh? Why not just admit you look like an ass?
Delete1:26 stop being an ass and posting crap you can't back up. At least Ho Lee Fuk posted what was printed facts while you posted nothing but shit and name calling.
ReplyDeleteAlso 1:26 we are not talking about all TV, we are talking only about football. So if you can't stay on the subject at hand then shut the fuck up.
ReplyDeleteSo triggered!
DeleteAs far as tailgating you should have to show game tickets at the entrance of the parking lot. Where else are you allowed to hang around in a parking lot cooking, drinking and watching TV ? It is simple security. Ticket holders pay $60 to park should expect to walk past a bunch of campers to get to the stadium, and wonder about their car while they are at the game. Was the Taylor Swift concert lot full of her fans during her show ?
ReplyDelete^^^^^^^^^Good Point
ReplyDeleteThe shooting range did not have any football games playing on TV today.
ReplyDelete^^^Pity you didn’t end it today. Maybe tomorrow? Chiefs won! Don’t act like you don’t care....you’re you’re on a football thread jackbass! Maybe you’ll get your courage up to end it all next time you go to the gun range dummy!
Deletewhat Bout the player who went to the dolphns?
ReplyDeleteNotwithstanding all the negatives and irritating things, the Chiefs are great for Kansas City.
ReplyDeleteWe need to support them.
17-2 in AFC West!
ReplyDeleteDoesn’t matter what they do, it’s the same story every year they make the playoffs, one and done, they’ll win one eventually, I guarantee it!
ReplyDeleteOkay @4:44 - here goes!
ReplyDeleteAt first, Series 7, and later Series 63when it became adopted.
Later, Series 24, Series 51 and later, Series 27.
Was on the CBOE Task Force that created Options as a fungible instrument, and then added Series 9 registration.
13 Years with H. O. Peet & Co., then to Kidder Peabody with the merger for 6 years. Moved to Mother Merrill for five, then back to Kidder for my last 6 and a half.
Now, after you look up what all that means, and IF you have guts enough, either post your registrations and experience or slink away with your snarky little ass OWNED!
Chiefs win!!!!! Phony patriots who love Murcia lose again!
ReplyDeleteWell, @4:44, still waiting...(crickets)...
ReplyDelete50+ comments from the boycotting keyboard warriors.
ReplyDeleteI don't think boycott means what you think it means.
