TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! SURVEY SEYZ: KCMO ONLY BUILDS LUXURY HOUSING 2018!!!

While the political conversation focuses on elected officials attempting to win the hearts and minds of local voters with promises about access and cheaper rent, the reality is that construction in Kansas City favors the rich.

Accordingly, here's a list of not so fun facts sent our way EXCLUSIVELY from a national media organization.

The upshot . . .

KANSAS CITY HAS ONLY BUILT LUXURY LIVING SPACE IN 2018 DESPITE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CHATTER!!!

Check the info:

Last year the construction of luxury rental properties had risen to 79% of all apartment construction in the U.S.

Highlights:

The Midwest saw the number of luxury apartments increase significantly since 2015, as the share went from 73% in 2015 to 82% in 2017.

Kansas City Metro was one of the most active metros in the high-end apartment sector last year, as 91% of the of the apartments built in 2017 were luxury.

Preliminary numbers from the first half of 2018 show that the trend continues in the Kansas City Metro, as 100% of the apartments built are high-end.

Here's more evidence of the trend from our reporting partners: High-End Apartments Are 87% of Rentals Built in 2018

  1. Of course there are empty promises, that's the only way to get relected in kansas city.

  2. ^Awww...too bad Tony's readers don't have the wherewithal to buy luxury. Stick to your trailers & retirement communities TKC. The rest of us don't want anything to do with you.

  3. Part of the affordable housing debate that gets overlooked is that it isn't simply about artificially keeping rents low, but it's about building more homes *in general* so that supply can meet demand. As folks move out of their older homes into newer, larger homes, much of the older housing stock becomes "affordable".

The challenge is that often times, the vacancy of these areas usually follows a trend, and without building diverse communities, we are destined to shift poverty from one place to the next, without allowing folks in the bottom quintile the ability to build wealth through equity in home ownership.

  4. 2:58: Thanks for your input, Chris. I'm sure the big guy's really proud of your response.

  5. I’m pretty sure sLIE doesn’t want to build any “projects”, matter of fact I don’t want my tax money building any type of apartment buildings at all.

I just want my damn streets fixed.

  6. More evidence supporting the fact Slie wants all the blight removed from the downtown area and pushed to the outer fringes of KCMO or completely out of KCMO. Slie wants the downtown area to eventually be a high income earner area thus the need for luxury living areas. Another item is the Jackson County jail which Slie wants moved out of KCMO.
This blight hurts SLie's vision of a downtown area utopia and hurts the 25 million anally tourists. Slie does not like the homeless riding the free fair weather toy train.

  7. I think this is the part that's being overlooked.

There's nothing wrong with luxury housing at all. If there's demand for it, build away and let the market determine the winners.

    But here's the rub:

KCMO is giving tax breaks to all the luxury housing developments downtown and in the crossroads. None of them are paying their fair share or paying their way at all. Meanwhile, we've got people who honestly need help with their rent or need better, safe and clean options and the only help we're getting is these crap ordinances that just hire more staff.

  8. KC is where crime lives. Can't do anything until you fix that.

  9. If you think this isn't your problem, just look at all the new "diversity" in places like Overland Park, Grandview and Olathe. That's the impact of KCMo focusing on luxury.

Good luck folks, your local governments hate you.

  10. Hey now, don't feel to bad about the lack off affordable housing in Kansas City. I'm sure that every city pays 18 million to build a luxury parking lot for a national developer worth billions of dollars.

  11. They can’t fix the crime without violating the civil rights of certain perpetual victims. Victims of being on welfare for several generations.

  12. "KANSAS CITY HAS ONLY BUILT LUXURY LIVING SPACE IN 2018 DESPITE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CHATTER!!!" Correction: Kansas City builds nothing. At most Kansas City has failed to make developers incorporate unprofitable living spaces in their plans, which would cause rents in the rest of the units to increase and become even less affordable to the working middle class. So Kansas City's failure is a good thing for downtown residents.

  13. Who wants to live in an condo? I make enough money that I could easily live in one if I wanted, and I have many friends who do. Every time I go to their place I feel cramped though. No lawn, have to take an elevator and park in some multi storied garage. I love my house. If you like condos, I'm happy for you but it's not for me

@2:58, no you ignorant slut anyone with half a brain isn't going to want to live in those overpriced dumps located in a area of high crime.

I have a nice house in a nice residential area where so far crime is low and when I look out my window I see trees and grass and not industrial buildings, warehouses and tons of concrete that is never cleaned of trash blowing everywhere. Then you have planes ripping by wanting to land at the airport as the sounds of being surrounded by freeways adds to the noise pollution that you hear 24/7.

I doubt you live in one of the new luxury places either unless it's a cardboard box in the basement of one. No those places have nothing to offer a person in the way of luxury solely due to where they are located.

    1. You sound really jealous? What’s a matter, can’t afford it? Second thought, stay in your suburban zombie land with the rest of the dead-behind the eyes sheep. Your nice house in a nice residential area comes with tons of consumer debt and more crime than you would ever care to admit. The obese brain-dead lumps who populate it, stuff their greasy mouths with all the fine fast food restaurants who line the burbs. Their idea of culture is seven hours of TV a night. Yea right, Maude...you’re living in paradise.

  16. Westwood Village was the best investment I ever made. I just loved my hip and cool luxury apartment. Close walk to the Woodside health club and pool too! Until we had to move out due to shoddy construction, mold, plumbing leaks. I feel for the students in the new apartments at MU who had to vacate also. At least that was built to last ten years before falling apart.

KC Builders really know their shit!

  17. Hey fuck face at 7:24 my shit is paid for won't see me paying no high dollar month rents for that crap downtown. Oh and compared to KCMO I am living the good life for sure. When I dial 911 I don't get put on hold and people show up in just a few minutes ready to whack you losers from Missouri. And fat fucks are everywhere, look who is running that place you claim to love so well.

  18. ^^^I thought there wasn’t any crime in the burbs. What are you doing calling 911 all the time? Busted!!!!!! Liar, liar. Your shit is paid for...well the trailer only cost 10k and it took you 30years to get it paid off! Go way rube, you got schooled!
