Rachel McMeachin is one of the leading artistic forces in Kansas City and just moments ago she embarked on a very brave effort to share her perspective on a recent shooting in the Crossroads.
Accordingly . . .
KANSAS CITY ARTIST RACHEL McMEACHIN SHARES THE STORY OF HOW HER SON'S INVOLVEMENT IN THE CROSSROADS RHYTHM & BOOZE GUNFIRE ATTACK!!!
For those who don't know her work or don't follow the KC arts scene, Rachel McMeachin is a performer, a yoga teacher, founder of Voler (Volay) – Thieves of Flight - An aerial acrobatic troupe. And she's the founding host of Dr. Sketchy's Kansas City school of art.
TKC personal aside to provide more context: Of all the local celebs I've met, Ms. McMeachin is probably the nicest. TKC has an annoying habit of always introducing myself for the 1st time whenever I encounter anybody that I don't know really well . . . To date, she's the only person who ever reassured me politely that I had, in fact, met her several times previously . . . Whilst looking for a photo of her, I noticed that she's always smiling, very personable and usually in the company of her many friends - So, I found a TKC file photo from around 2014 - Other media, feel free to use with attribution.
Now, here's the most descriptive part of her perspective on the shooting . . .
"About the crime. Nathan, his friend Chris and his girlfriend were out at a bar he has been a regular of for 7 years. There was a man at the bar that made insulting and inappropriate comments to his girlfriend about how she looked and what she was wearing. Nathan punched the guy for his remarks. There was a scuffle and the fight was broken up. The bar kicked the guy out. A few min. later he came back (security let him back in the bar after he’d been kicked out just a few min. earlier) He had a gun and shot Nathan in the back as he was standing at the bar. One of the bullets passed thru him and into his friend Chris that was standing next to him. His girlfriend jumped on the shooter as he was aiming to shoot Nathan a third time as he was laying on the ground. She was nicked in the thumb by a bullet that was fired while she was struggling with him. He ran out of the bar to the car that was waiting for him (the woman he was with earlier was waiting as the get away driver).
"There has been an arrest. I have yet to follow up with the police so I don’t have any details other than he was positively identified in a line up by at least 3 people that were a witness to the event . . ."

What we can learn from this descriptive, powerful and forthright account is that Kansas City gunfire can target ANYONE and has the potential to impact lives beyond the immediate scope of a shooting.

bar fights are bad news. You really can't get in punch people while out drinking in KC. You can almost guarantee they're going to come back with a gun if you get the better of them.

Just once I think that it's important to realize that the violence impact other people too. Even worse I think we know that this violence didn't come from within the gentrifier or art community it was "urban" violence that was the culprit.

That was the first crime. The guy that got punched should have called the police and had puncher arrested. Bet you his mom wished this had happened. Instead the guy that got punched shot him in the back resulting in serious possible deadly injuries.
ReplyDeleteCan be avoided by ignoring the shooter and if you are regular you could have alerted the staff. Punching someone is not the answer. Leave instead of trying to make it right in your mind.
Not saying the guy deserved to get shot in the back but he could have avoided it by handling it different.
Hope he recovers and the shooter gets the full weight of the law but let it be lesson.
