The Rent Is Too Damn High In Kansas City

Aftermath of the housing debate . . . Here's what the local news didn't report . . . Other than valid complaints regarding the cost of living.

THE KCMO TALK ABOUT AFFORDABLE HOUSING WAS MOSTLY FOR SHOW AND ONLY THREATENS TO IMPOSE MORE SANCTIONS (TAXES) ON PROPERTY OWNERS!!!

Kansas City has more renters than the national average - more rentals are needed . . .

Already there's pushback against a litany of policy that will "thwart a landlord's ability to reject prospective tenants that won an eviction lawsuit or were evicted five-plus years ago. It also would prevent landlords from discriminating on the basis of an applicant's source of income, such as housing vouchers or Social Security.

"Landlords voiced their concerns to city council members, saying the plan would take away their flexibility in choosing tenants and that ultimately it could lead to higher rents and security deposits in order to protect landlords against the cost of evicting a tenant."

Housing Study: For Low-Income Residents, Kansas City Is Far From Affordable

Kansas City, Missouri, has long prided itself as an affordable place to live. But a new study commissioned by the city paints a different picture. The study, commissioned a year ago by the city council, shows that affordable housing options exist for people of high or moderate incomes.

  1. I took an economics class 101 and the professor explained the Law of supply and demand, it was simple really. That if there isn't enough of the product the demand and price goes up and if there is too much of the product the demand and price goes down.

Right now there are to many renters and the price goes up. The city raises property taxes every year plus they just put a new rental law in the books for landlords which adds cost to them which is passed onto the renters, thanks city hall!

    Next question?

  8. Rent in KC is super cheap. I've lived around the country and good luck finding anything under $1000 anywhere. Maybe if you're comparing KC to Omaha or Wichita or something it's expensive, but you go to any major city and it costs a good amount of money. You can rent just about any area here in town for less than $1000 and I see 1 bedrooms in overland park listed for less than $700. Kc is finally having to face the reality that every other city faced years ago

  9. ^^You are right. It doesn't matter that you're right of course, because this is just a troll piece to get the geriatric complainers to post. TKC readers don't need facts, in fact they never use them. The posters on here are just looking for someone to agree with all "THEIR" facts. It's hilarious really.

  13. No one ever mentions that a large area of KC is simply unfit to live in due to crime. Many of the homes in these areas have been allowed to deteriorate since even good homes sell for next to nothing. So take out the supply from these crime ridden areas and you squeeze renters into smaller areas of town. Supply down, rents go up.

  21. Yes, the rents in Kansas City are stupidly expensive. But why not just move to the suburbs where it's cheaper?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Some major cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and others have rent control. People in those cities lucky enough to have a rent control apartment pay very little. Maybe Kansas City should look into rent control?
