TKC TOLD YOU SO!!! TROUBLED SPRINT SELLING OVERLAND PARK CAMPUS!!!

They're calling it a "consolidation" but it's more like the beginning of the end.

Here's a really sad update on the inevitability that includes happy biz speak as MORE MASSIVE LAYOFFS APPROACH . . .

KC Biz Journal: Sprint Corp. plans to sell its Overland Park headquarters, leasing back a portion that it uses, CEO Michel Combes announced Wednesday in emails to employees and Kansas City leaders.

Deets:

The company will consolidate its employees into fewer buildings on Sprint's 4 million-square-foot campus. Sprint already leases out about 1 million square feet to other tenants, according to commercial real estate firm CBRE Group Inc.

"Because we no longer need all our buildings, we are also exploring an option to sell the campus and lease back only the buildings we need. This would enable us to use the proceeds from the sale to reinvest in the spaces we do use," Combes wrote. "We have identified a building as the renewed heart of our campus, and the renovations are going to be amazing!"

  3. How long before the arena downtown gets a new name? I’m surprised it’s been “Sprint Center” this long. Sports arenas like this change names frequently.

  4. Will Overland Park get to "claw back" any of the millions in incentives they gave Sprint?
How about KCMO with the Harley fiasco?
One grandiose "development" project after another that unsurprisingly has to deal with economic and business realities instead of hype fades away leaving communities in the lurch and taxpayers holding the empty bag.
    How's Mike's new taxpayer-owned hotel downtown coming?
    It never changes.

Fine, thanks. How's the cardboard box you're living in?

  8. OP walked into that Sprint deal with their eyes wide open, so no sympathy for them. I do feel sorry for the poor schlubs who gave their all to a company that turned them out like a flea-bitten dog.

Kansas City Business Journal-11 hours ago
Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (NYSE: HPE) has tapped a former Sprint executive as its next CFO, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Tarek Robbiati left Sprint in February after a two-and-a-half year tenure during which, according to HPE, he “drove Sprint’s transformation efforts to significantly reduce operating expenses and played a strategic leadership role in repositioning the company.”

Actually, you may have come up with a great idea for KCMO to address its increasingly serious and disruptive homeless problem.
If the city can find $35+ million to subsidize an unneeded hotel, surely it could spend a similar amount to help people who live in cardboard boxes, under bridges, or even on the street.
And that would improve the quality of life for people who actually live and work here rather than make-believe "investors" or out-of-town hotel corporations.
So keep up the good work and let's all hope the gang at 12th and Oak take your public policy suggestions to heart.

  14. The Sprint campus was a scam to begin with orchestrated by former CEO Bill Esrey to money launder and transfer company money to his family's construction company Cohen-Esrey who built the campus. Needless to say the city of Overland Park was complicit in all of this.
