TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! KANSAS CITY ARTIST PEREGRINE HONIG HIT WITH 'CULTURAL APPROPRIATION' CRITICISM OVER WESTSIDE HOUSING TRIBUTE T-SHIRT!!!

The most prominent artist in Kansas City confronts another round of fierce criticism over her latest work and allegations that she's insensitive toward people of color in communities impacted by gentrification.

More to the point, and in the opinion of Kansas City's one and only Westside based news outlet (other than Fox4), a relatively unknown Latino artist is playing the race card against Peregrine Honig in order to bolder his lackluster career.

Here's the argument of the obscure artist Rodolfo Marron III:

"Here we go, cultural appropriating artist Becky strikes again.

"How many young brown men have been shot and killed in the Westside over hood affiliation?!?

"Now this gringa comes in with this mierda? Nah!

"When black and brown folk throw up gang signs, they are thugs!

"When wypipo sport that shit on a t-shirt, it’s an aesthetic choice!

"Fuck that tone-deaf Christina Columbus bullshit!!!"

Since the posting, there has been a smattering of support for Mr. Marron despite his vaguely sexist language that is probably excused because his attack is directed against a white female.

Never mind that Mr. Marron himself is a newcomer to Kansas City's Crossroads/Westside area and many lifers in this rapidly evolving barrio might, in fact, call the LA native artist a member of the new gentry.

Still, here's an important fact regarding the shirt that should be clarified amid local criticism that was omitted from comments by a social media mob:

The design was donated by Peregrine Honig as part of a fundraising effort for Westside Housing amid their upcoming 45th anniversary which they'll celebrate on September 12th. The organization initially welcomed the help as part of an ongoing collaboration in their mission to provide affordable housing in a neighborhood that has seen skyrocketing demand for real estate and rising rents.

Even better . . .

TKC INTERVIEWED ARTIST PEREGRINE HONIG TODAY ON THE TOPIC OF THIS CONTROVERSY AND OUTCRY OVER 'WESTSIDE' CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!!!

Here's part of what she had to say:

"I understand that some people can be triggered by recontextualizing an iconic symbol and I'm open to a conversation about what that might mean to different perspectives," Ms. Honig said. "I think the debate surrounding who can and can't say something deserves consideration but that wasn't my intention with this work . . . Some of the responses have really hit home for me."

She spoke to her history on Kansas City's Westside:

"I've lived here for more than 10 years and I'm grateful that a wonderful organization like Westside Housing has been an ongoing partner in collaboration."

What I sensed from Ms. Honig is that she was sensitive to the complaints about appropriation, probably far too much so.

And the brief chat leads TKC to this moment of clarity . . .

A PIERCED & STRUGGLING LATINO ARTIST CLAIMING OWNERSHIP OF THE WESTSIDE AND ALL ASSOCIATED HAND GESTURES IS NOT ONLY STRAIGHT OUT OF THE PC THUG PLAYBOOK BUT ALSO A LAUGHABLE PLOY TO GARNER ATTENTION!!!

What can be gleaned from his social media tirade is that he doesn't know much about the neighborhood and was desperately searching for a reason to be offended. On the topic of "appropriation" his criticism about crime and equality is misplaced inasmuch as the world doesn't really need a social justice crusade for t-shirt design.

Maybe he's talking about the greater West Coast "Westside" and if that's the case . . . Snoop Dogg probably has the final say on "appropriation" . . . Sadly, the rapper is out of the political game after it proved too stressful. But I digress . . .

To be fair, Mr. Marron might have his heart in the right place but dumping the burden for the social ills of gang violence, gentrification and colonialism on the skinny shoulders of Peregrine Honig is probably expecting too much.

And while composing this artsy screed . . . A new development has arisen . . .

TOMORROW A DEBATE AMONG "PEOPLE OF COLOR ONLY" WILL CONSIDER THE WORK OF PEREGRINE HONIG AND HER ALLEGED APPROPRIATION!!!

Description:

"TOMORROW! @kcaoca will be hosting “Culture Vultures: Black and Brown Pain for Aesthetic” in response to recent cultural appropriation within the arts. This conversation asks self-identifying POC individuals to join us and engage in a constructive dialogue about these issues. T-shirt designs by @archiegobber @hawcontemporary @peregrinehonig"

The fighting and harsh feelings among the artistic community on this topic has been vicious, probably because there is so little at stake. However, we can't help but notice a trend . . .

Very much like a controversy involving Prospero's book store this year . . . What we're seeing is that local progressives are enforcing an increasingly strict code of conduct and ideology backed up by social media mobs. This liberal "volk" (for lack of a better English word) has grown increasingly merciless as Midterm elections approach and their wrath isn't spared when one of their own members strays from the party line.

While Peregrine Honig might make a convenient punching bag in this situation, overall the trend is troubling inasmuch as cultural, political and ideological unanimity that's rigidly enforced is rarely a manifestation of a vibrant artistic community and instead betrays far more sinister motivations and tactics of the Kansas City creative class.

You decide . . .

Comments

  1. Here's the deal:

She can't do and say something because she's white.

Isn't that the textbook definition of racism right there?

They're having a meeting because she did a t-shirt they didn't like and claim it's racism. Unacceptable. Really a sad comment on local arts.

  2. WTF. I think the west side, east side and downtown have bigger problems than what's on a t-shirt. What's fudged up is that these people are adults playing this game. Hope it helps their painting because it's not helping their political causes.

  4. Adults upset because the artist did not get city hall's approval before getting t-shirts made. The general thought is artists are supposedly very open minded, guess not.

  5. Wow. Boring. Who cares? Geezers only because they're lonely and they want to talk about something with other lonely geezers. All of the above comments are from said lonely geezers.

  6. The sad thing is, what she is accused of culturally appropriating is not worth the effort it takes to appropriate it. If you're going to culturally appropriate, get something good. A burrito maybe. Or a sombrero.

"Honig" is an Ashkenazi Jewish name. Jews aren't "White", Jews are Jews--ask a Rabbi. No single group pushes the Communist Narrative more zealously and loudly than Jews. That said, Rodolfo is an LA bitch that needs to take himself much less seriously and simply take his candy-ass back to La La Land. An appropriate title for this would be "When Marxists Collide". Actually, these "collisions" among Leftists are becoming more and more frequent and more and more entertaining. Thank You for the story, Mr. Botello.

  8. I am totally ok with NOT culturally appropriating the cultures of "People Of Color". I won't corn roll my hair, listen to rap and if there is a list, I will read it and respectfully abstain.

In the meantime, they - "People Of Color" can stop appropriating things, like, cars, trains and planes. Get the fuck out of your car, drop the keys on the ground and give it to a deserving white man.

Hospitals, pain killers, surgery, agriculture, shit, every fuckin thing you enjoy in this modern life and take for granted, was invented by white men.

Read it and weep geezer hater fuck.

Leave poor Peregrine alone with her "art" and her visions, whatever the fuck they are.

God bless white people. If not for white people, all of us, would be living under a tree in a loin cloth, eating bananas and praying for the witch doctor - medicine man to make the buffalo come so we could eat some raw liver and howl at the moon.

  12. Further proof that liberals are always looking for ways to be offended. It's especially fun when liberals get mad at other liberals.

    ReplyDelete
  13. It appears the artist formerly know as Rodolfo Marron is trying to infuse his shallow L.A. progressive white privilege values on the hipster art scene of KCMO. Obviously the nose hoop and ear rings basically eliminates all of his limited credibility.

  14. I love watching street trash fight with each other.

I've got the solution here. Let's get these two grease stuff ready angry and put them in the Sprint Center to Slug It Out until we can declare a winner. Too much? Well then maybe we ought to think about asking for decent neighborhood preservation policy better street lights and more police for our neighborhoods rather than jerking off over t-shirts.

  36. Peregrine is an artist only in the post pop art sense. She can't draw better than an 11 year old, so that is her aesthetic. I find her really boring and I hate her politics. She, like most artists of her caliber, is relentlessly self promoting, and I find this tiresome too.
To have her being attacked from the left is just hilarious! But she will somehow use it to her advantage.

  40. Liberalism is a mental disease

    ReplyDelete
  41. The anger is horribly misplaced here, why did Westside Housing hire Peregrine instead of a latino/latina artist? That is the original sin here.
    Go Gloria, (far away please)

    ReplyDelete
  42. ^^^^ Good question, that might have avoided a lot of the controversy.

    ReplyDelete
  43. So, let's get this straight. An artist wants to do something nice for her neighborhood and donate some of her work and then some guy comes along and attacks her because of gang murders. Did she commit them? Don't think so. The whole thing is a ridiculous Kansas City tempest in a teapot but it's typical of the "creative class" and their nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Not a KC Tempest at all...
An LA Fag named Rudy Martin (note: not Mar-teen)comes here and changes his name to "Rudolpho Marron" and stirs up a pot of shit in
Little Juarez, and a few bored pachucos join in.

And as far as Ursula Nutsack's little pseudo-Nazi rant, Du Bladersau, macht schnell back to der Kitchn, der Schnitzel's smoking!

  47. I suspect Peregrine is sensitive due to the whole "#MeToo" incident that caused so much of a stir.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I thought the women in the me too movement didn't want to get pounded?

    Bwahahahahahahahahhaaha!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Cultural appropriation is a myth. All art is referential and borrows from all of human history and all of the artists' experience. I will not take a side on this but I think anyone who really loves art realizes that this debate is the opposite of good criticism and community, it seeks to silence rather than engage and create a conversation.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You daft assholes don't know shit from shit. Rodolfo grew up in the West Side and his family did do. He is a KC artist through and through. His work is in museum shows and will be remembered. You fucking morons will be forgotten and time will erase you. You will leave nothing behind aside from the dried up jizz on the carpet of your dad's basement. 57. I'm a big fan of Peregrine and her work. Don't understand all of the hatred, she was trying to do something good here and got beaten down for it.

The question you need to ask is this TKC: What has this other guy done for his community?

His parents own a restaurant? That's great but what has he contributed. Looks like the only thing he's got going is some drawing and a facebook friends.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Very interesting discussion. Lots of trolls here but a few good points. We need to respect all perspectives.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'm thinking that a lot of this discussion is just people who don't love art either way and they're just looking to be angry!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I side with Peregrine here, the guy is a hater and he was just looking for an easy target. He didn't realize that he looks really gross when he knocks somebody for trying to do something nice.
