This local complaint has a bit more pull than the rest of the plebs but still argues against a costly local ritual that terrifies most unfortunate souls who confront the city's scary tow lot . . . Take a look:
KCMO seeks to crack down on towing price gouging
KCMO seeks to crack down on towing price gouging
Towing is a shakedown. Companies have a right to charge what they'd like, but if the MOHP intervenes for an injured driver, there should be a standard rate charged to the driver, not whatever rate they decide to charge. A wreck in the middle of a busy highway is an opportunity for towing companies to take advantage of the consumer, especially when under pressure my MOHP or the the local police. Drivers should have negotiated towing service rates with their insurance companies, and an insurer-approved local tow company (for commuters) card in their glove box. That info should be in their phones, and with relatives. I'll stop short of saying they should be regulated, but they have an opportunity to gouge the consumer, and often do.
ReplyDelete10:01 not only your car wreck example, but also if your car is stolen and recovered in kcmo you get gouged over a hundred dollars for towing and storage. I tried to help someone get the charges waived or reimbursed but no dice. Councilman Lucas was polite and helpful but ultimately ineffective vis a vis the city tow lot and the greedy tow company and the city bureaucracy.

This crap is as old as Oldsmobiles, so not expect a fix this century.
ReplyDeleteThis has been going on for years in KCMO. The City Council has not addressed this issue. WHY???
ReplyDeleteBecause they get kick backs from the tow companies?
DeleteSeems like City should take bids for annual towing contract. Then citizens would get good, fixed price.
ReplyDeleteTime to organize by class because this rugged individualism isn't working. If you pull in a paycheck for a living that makes you working class.
ReplyDelete@10:50 If the council addressed the problem it would hurt the kickback.
ReplyDeleteIs this a recycled article? This comes up every year for the last five years, what’s that tell you? Nothing will change because it never did in the first place.
ReplyDeleteJim ready is a worthless idiot
ReplyDeleteKCMO "cracks down" on tow gouging about every three years. Yet nothing changes.
