JOHNSON COUNTY RESIDENTS PROTEST MERRIAM POOL BAIT & SWITCH!!!

Very dedicated JoCo residents have been calling out their government officials on a topic that impacts families and taxpayers pushing back against local government decisions. Here's a look at their arguments and hope for accountability . . .

What’s Happening in Merriam City Hall?

Big News: This fall, the City of Merriam plans to demolish the outdoor swimming pool you have come to enjoy. Our very nice pool will be replaced in 2020 with the smallest outdoor city swimming pool in Johnson County- only 27% of the current pool size. Slides will be gone along with concession stand, high dive and easy access to bathrooms and locker rooms.

Is this what you voted for last year when you told the city to go ahead and increase sales taxes by ¼ cent and borrow over $20 million to build the $30 million community center? In the secret project design planning by city staff, the $10 million allocated in the Master Plan budget for aquatics was reduced to $4.4 million without notifying the City Council. You can learn more about the serious problems with the community center project at http://www.MerriamConcernedCitizens.com

The next City Council meeting may be your last chance to speak up before our swimming pool is bull dozed away, don’t miss your opportunity.

  1. People should absolutely reject this. Ram through by council and really quite a shame.

  2. We are the government. We do what ever we want to. We take your money. We will spend it the way we want to.

The concept of government by the people for the people is so old school.

Now, its government of the people.

    Altruism is unpopular.

  5. As someone who grew up in JOCO let me say that Merriam is trash. It is poorly managed and should actually just be a part of Wyandotte county. I would never raise kids there because the schools they would go to are the worst in JOCO. The only thing I can think of with this pool debacle is someone on city council has a connection to someone. It’s a hell of a deal for the council member. This backwards stuff is only supposed to happen in mayor James kcmo not in JOCO.

  6. What is the reason the council gave for reducing the size of the pool?

  11. This really is a rather hot subject in Merriam and not all of the city council is onboard with this so called new pool plan. If you live in Merriam I would suggest you go to tomorrow nights meeting and make your voice heard.

  14. This is interesting. I thought that type of "bait and switch" only occurred in Kansas City, MO. Too bad that the residents are losing a rather nice pool.

  16. 1142, Merriam is NOT trash. I'd say wherever you moved to should be condemned.
