KCK Ethnic Glory Stays Losing

As always, the return trip hope ends in disappointment as these middle-class denizens quickly return back to the suburbs. Read more:

Kansas City's Croatian population takes World Cup disappointment in stride

Even with Croatia's loss to France in the World Cup there were no long faces on Strawberry Hill, the neighborhood in Kansas City, Kansas that has drawn Slavic immigrants for more than a century. Red and white checkerboard Croatian seemed to be everywhere before Sunday morning's final against France.

  2. Just because the Croatian team lost in the world cup final does not label them or the fans as losers. Getting to the final is a tremendous accomplishment for a team from a small country. I am proud to know several Croatians and think their national pride is a source of encouragement for us all.

  3. Yessiree, Bob. The HRVATSKA pro futbol fans in the metro will be enjoying the ride on the #2 spot of WC '18 for awhile. Now back to their good jobs, nice homes, tight families, and such. Croat festivals/weddings/holidays/sports/many events will be celebrated with some added joys, no doubt.

Plus, there's talk amidst our KCK buds of vacays to the ol' country soon. I hope to see the ancient cities, someday. While an art student at a KCK Catholic school(long ago) and I had a Croat born spouse later who told about childhood there and family vacays throughout the former Yugoslavia, I read about the prisine beaches and the resorts having haute cuisine being favorites of the native Slavs, and especially the world's wealthy. Some of the Kennedys, Guinness clan, Rockefellers, Warhol, Rolling Stones, Saudi royals, and much more, were seen in the posh playgrounds on the coasts and islands. Their beautiful nude beaches (nekkid people, not empty sands!) brought artists and onlookers from far and wide. Hmmmmmm, any futbol matches in the buff?

  5. My favorite part of the insular, clannish and utterly selfish parish at St. John Baptist: the sum total of their Hispanic outreach is the bilingual ‘no playing’ and ‘no trespassing’ sign posted at the playground of the former school. But they do have a bar, a bowling alley, and a cherished narrative for the old timers to cling to.
