Reality check on all of those bike/walk efforts that mostly hassle neighborhoods but do very little to protect people on more heavily trafficked thoroughfares. Also a reminder that local cars don't offer pedestrians much respect . . .

Young art student from California killed in KCMO crash

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-- Members of the Kansas City Art Institute are mourning the death of a 21-year-old student. On Friday afternoon, July 20, Haley Elizabeth Hackett and her friend Arlan Engin were walking westbound on 43rd Street and were attempting to cross Main Street when a maroon SUV heading eastbound on 43rd street made a left turn to go north on Main street, striking both of them.

    KCAI students will be holding a silent vigil in the intersection of 43rd and Main on Saturday night to honor their classmate. Attendees are requested to wear black.
