Here's just a bit of propaganda and local hype about an upcoming visitors who may not total 25-million but might help to boost the local economy nevertheless . . . Take a look:
Kansas City secures 17 large conventions for future meetings
Published by Ozgur Tore Visit KC announced 17 major convention bookings for future years, marking a fruitful first half of 2018 for the organization. Representing the corporate, religious, health science, sports and educational market segments, these events will cumulatively generate more than $174 million in local economic impact based on a calculation using the combination of attendance and room nights.
Be sure to advise all attendees to come armed, wearing body armor.

ReplyDeleteSo the big claim of $174 million, most of which will be siphoned away by out-of-town hotel and restaurant corporations and rental car companies leaving a few crumbs for service workers in KC.
ReplyDeleteThe insistence on grasping at the obsolete notion that somehow conventions are a measure of success in KCMO is about as cutting-edge as THE streetcar.

Friday night at union Station in July when there is usually tons of people having some kind of event was dead. Union Station was empty.
The Plaza has some stores that used to be open until 8:P.M. closed early now or pulled out completely because of flash mobs. The only people around were people at some eating establishments.
The funny part of this is, Sly James is feeding the developers to build huge expensive rentals and it doesn't matter whether they get rented or sit there empty, the developer still makes money.
There is nothing impressive about this list. Two of the largest are Black church organizations (45,000 attendees). With the exception of The National League of Cities and The American Occupational Therapy Association, there are no large convention listed. BTW, the AMEs are coming in 2028.

This is the "Show Me" Sate, so show me!
Who in their right mind wants to come to KC for a convention, or even a family reunion. There is NOTHING to do here (I'm looking at you, sports teams.) I've lived here my whole life, and the "major" attractions are a drunk tank (KCPL District), the Zoo (nice, but you do it once), the infamous shopping district (CC Plaza), and the lackluster eating places (BBQ anyone?). A week in KC is like a month in hell.
