Kansas City Public Defender's Office Gets Another Shot To Argue It's Overworked
The state Public Defender's Office in Kansas City, the largest in Missouri, will have another chance to argue that its caseloads have become unmanageable. On Tuesday, the Missouri Court of Appeals ruled that the presiding judge of Jackson County wrongly refused to hold a formal hearing on the issue.
I would have some sympathy for the public defenders office except for one thing. Jean Petersucker Baker is the prosecutor and is the weakest prosecutor ever.
ReplyDeleteThe strategy for the public defenders should be to plead down the guilty ones to way lesser crimes. Jean Petersucker Baker is ok with that. Then the public defender would have adequate time to defend the clients who are actually innocent, which is only about 10% of their cases, at most. Their acquittal rate would be about 98% against Jean Petersucker Baker.

DeleteThe public defenders bank on the fact that their clients are indigent defendant who have no idea of what's going on or how the law works and have no idea of the attorneys' competence or the value of their advice. And neither do their friends or families.
ReplyDeletePoor decisions and worse advice are given regularly and, when mistakes are made, the public appeals lawyers in the office work to cover their colleagues rather than admit mistakes and represent the interests of their clients.
Then actual falsehoods are told to try to cover the whole sorry affair.
These folks may be short-handed and need more money, but what is needed even more is a thorough objective review of the operation and much more effective training, supervision, and honest oversight.
You really can't even begin to make believe that justice is served by this system.
We need to institute a one child welfare system. One child, need aid ? Get it in exchange for sterilization. Nice guys finish last. We are going on 50 years of being nice and we have two or three generations of wasted worthless humans of all colors. Teach them to fish.
