Kansas City Mayor Pushes A Sales Tax For Pre-K But Concerns Linger

Kansas City, Missouri, residents could be asked to vote on a sales tax increase in November to help make early childhood education more affordable for area children. Mayor Sly James is working with the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce on a plan that would offset pre-K costs for families of eligible 4-year-olds.

  1. Just the latest example of what happens when you elect people to municipal office who have no real interest or understanding of city government or what the residents depend on it to do.
The electeds simply become conduits between an endless line of special interests with big big ideas, and the taxpayers, who the"officials" come to view as a bottomless source of money to fund whoever's idea is on their desks at the time.
And with low-information residents and low-turnout elections, the tax burden just keeps piling up.
Funding education programs is not a city function.
And funding programs and employees with sales tax money, that goes up and down with the economy, is an even worse idea.
Sales taxes are the most regressive of the bunch and adversely affect lower income folks the most. The very people who can't afford to do more for their kids.
Sly's focus on his own popularity and "what are you going to run for next" continues to leave a legacy of long-term unintended consequences which will burden KCMO residents for decades.

  2. Team Slie is at it again. KCMO will require that all taxpayers report to Berkley Riverfront Park, line up facing north, drop trou, bend over and spread them. Team Slie wants taxpayers facing the north as Slie does not like to administer doses with the sun in his eyes and he loves seeing the rosy ones. If Slie does not think yours are rosy enough then your assessment will be much higher. Then Team Slie comes along to issue your monthly assessment treatment which may range from $100 to maybe as much as $100000 depending on how much of your money team Slie has given away. Following up all the rears will be Go4KC applying Missouri River mud to ease the hurt.
After the treatment Missouri River mud hands will hold Slie’s bullhorn so Slie can belt out that the treatment was a success. As taxpayers leave Team Slie member Schulte writes everyone their monthly prescription and everyone lives happily ever after.

  3. Hey, it only cost $10,000 per kid according to team sLIE, I’m still wondering what they’re going to do with all that extra money they’re trying to scam because pre k at private schools doesn’t cost a third of that.

  4. But since blacks are so stupid maybe it’s a three year program!

  5. Wouldn’t increased exposure to Kansas City schools be detrimental to the kids learning? Well at least they would get fed and taken out of their drug infested homes sooner.

  6. There is little evidence that Pre-K has a lasting beneficial effect (other than on the people who are paid to administer it). This is just another in a long line of solutions du jour, none of which work and all of which suck up taxpayer money.

  7. If the city hadn't passed out all these TIFs, the school district WOULD HAVE MORE MONEY.

  8. And guess what the tax will pass because KC just keeps voting in all these new taxes. If I were the city I'd keep adding taxes also if the general public is stupid enough to keep voting Yes on them.

  9. 9:25 with the only comment that matters. Schools are going to have to keep raising property taxes to cover the gap from all the incentives Sly keeps getting. We all go to work to pay taxes for Sly to give them to corporations.

  13. Hyperblogal makes a good point. The City gave away tax money from school districts to developers, but where did THEY get the authority to give away money that belonged to the schools? Now they want the taxpayer to pony up additional money to cover the funds stolen from the schools. Question: Does the TIF Commission include representatives from the libraries and schools? Do they get a say in how THEIR money is spent on developers?

  14. Team Slie steals money from any where he can to funnel to the developers.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hyperblogal is very correct with that statement. Due to the city handing out money to developers like candy at Halloween has created a deficit in funds to pay for those things that are really needed. So Sly and the gang ask the taxpayers for more money to cover his total lack of understanding that taxpayers money isn't there to build and develop all his lunatic projects. The government needs to run the cities and counties and let the developers borrow the money from the banks like they are suppose to to build their projects.

Have you ever seen a sign at a new building project that says, "Funding Provided For By Local Taxpayers"? No you haven't and I doubt you will ever see a truthful thing like that being displayed.
