Will Green Space Save The East Side???

Actually, a pretty inspiring report on urban core turnaround about some of the more unique ways that locals are rerouting storm sewer water along with other inspiring anecdotes about a community that's an urban core oasis amid more rough & tumble surroundings. Read more:

Between Kansas City's Troost And Prospect, Neighbors See A Green Future

High poverty rates, aging infrastructure and vacant homes. These are problems that commonly occur together and that discourage community revitilization. The Marlborough Community Coalition in south Kansas City, five neighborhoods come together as one, is trying to do things differently.

  1. Green space???? Come on! What they will do is turn it into a toilet, killing field and drug drop off like they did the park next to the church at Armour and Troost in Hyde Park, and the church finally had to close it down!

If the homes are in disrepair call 311. Each home owner is responsible for keeping their home up to code.

Troost and Prospect green future? LMAO

  2. Green? Somebody's kidding right? It's the color it is now, will be tomorrow, next year, next decade and next century and that's sure as hell not green.

  4. This will quickly turn into just another grift by the usual suspects.
Soon there'll be a press conference stating that with just a few hundred thousand dollars this "project" just can't help becoming a great success.
Maybe Cleaver can get his hands on some federal Department of Agriculture money!
It never changes and it never ends.
    Not even the names change!

  6. The negativity of opinions expressed here is suffocating. I'm going to support the good people trying to change things in Marlborough.

    1. In this case, Marlboro would be more appropriate. As in the kind of ciggy butts that will be among the litter.

  7. The key for all of this happening is the “massive public and private investments passionate leadership and community engagement." Article says nothing about hard work but maybe that is what community engagement is.
With massive public and private investments how can anything fail? Oops forgot about the Jazz museum.

  9. I am a white suburban old woman who was taught to be careful venturing east of Troost and certainly as far east as Prospect, even though a good portion of KC's businesses were located there. I have seen it decline through the years, but it seems that now there is some activity and hope. The SunFresh on Cleaver Blvd and the associated businesses seem to be healthy and viable. There are housing developments here and there that rival the suburbs. Businesses seem to be returning, even though there are not any of the big box stores so ubiquitous in the suburbs. Will it ever be like it was 60 years ago? Resoundingly no, but I can see a pattern developing of neighborhood businesses that are prospering. Middle class minorities who have remained on the east side seem to have started making a difference, and their patronage is going to be very important for the merchants who locate on the east side. I see a revival, and I am very glad.

  10. There is already more green space in the area than ever before. The city spends millions tearing down decrepit houses and turning each lot into green space. And it gets greener because nobody mows the spaces so there is more green because the weeds get so tall.

  12. 8:42---"OPTIMISM, n.
The doctrine, or belief, that everything is beautiful, including what is ugly, everything good, especially the bad, and everything right that is wrong. It is held with greatest tenacity by those most accustomed to the mischance of falling into adversity, and is most acceptably expounded with the grin that apes a smile. Being a blind faith, it is inaccessible to the light of disproof -- an intellectual disorder, yielding to no treatment but death. It is hereditary, but fortunately not contagious."
