TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! CAN E. FRANK ELLIS SAVE THE AMERICAN JAZZ MUSEUM?!?

A long suffering Kansas City 18th & Vine District institution recently earned some local Executive help amid its reorganization.

With special thanks to 3rd District Insiders . . .

Executive E. Frank Ellis has been (NOMINATED) for an appointment as Interim Executive Director of the American Jazz Museum.

For those who don't know . . .

Mr. E. Frank Ellis is the past chairman and chief executive officer of Swope Community Enterprises. He is also a past chairman of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and Brush Creek Community Partners.

Already there are some important questions about the interim transition.

Representation is important and African-American females don't yet have a voice on the incoming board as of yet according to sources. Also, the new board has a definite corporate bent which might be beneficial but doesn't really bode well for an exciting party.

And so we ask our blog community . . .

HOW CAN THE AJM ACHIEVE PROFITABILITY OR AT LEAST STOP BLEEDING RED INK SO PROFUSELY?!?!?

You decide . . .

Comments

  1. Examining expenses would be his bed bet going forward. Cutting the budget to the bone is an obvious step but something that hasn't been done for 20 years.

Getting the museum leaner and eliminating any waste is the best place to start.

    Good luck to Mr. Ellis.

    He's going to need it.

  3. Answer to Tony--
    they can't.
    Sinking ship.

An inside source told me Friday the City will pour another $8 million into it--that is not "balancing the budget".
then turn it over to Parks & Rec, since they have separate funding from the taxpayers.
The taxpayers and the "Joco visitors who account for 2/3 of the 25 million visitors to KCMO" every year...
who never went back after one or two visits to the American Jazz Museum.

Jazz is dead, and so is this museum. Even if a respected near-genius of a businessman as the wonderful Mr. Frank Ellis is at the helm.

He could not elect his wife, Janice to Mayor.
Nor will he be able to save the American Jazz Museum.

My source told the mayor and city manager that jazz is an American invention, and the best bet is to sell the museum, lock, stock and plastic saxophone, to some NATIONAL corporation that needs a writeoff and a rahrah trophy, and LET THEM RELOCATE IT TO ANOTHER CITY.

It's been a sad truth for years, (way before I coauthored Doubleday's "Right Here in River City" with Walt Bodine in 1976, after I was the head of the Mayor's Council on the Arts, after I was one of the first seven interns for the National Endowment for the Arts and brought grant money here for Charlie Parker Foundation and Turner House in KCK)
--jazz is not popular in KC any more.

    Stop the bleeding.
Stop spending tax dollars to subsidize failing operations.
    Let it go.

Mr. Ellis built his esteemed career supporting health. But what is needed now is an embalmer.

To those who say keep my nose out of KCMO, I DID my work there, supporting the arts. What have YOU ever done? And I sign my work, cowards.

  4. To better understand the players involved here:

While Mr. Ellis certainly did some great things over the years building the Swope portfolio, keep in mind that he also became a wealthy man from those efforts and continues to reap a windfall in retirement.

  8. People like Tracy and Glazer who have to continuously try and sell a book they didn't write to you points out what failures they are as they point a finger at someone else claiming what a failure they are. Tracy and Glazer both share that look at me I am so great and you are so a nobody attitude that frankly pisses a lot of people off. For sure the only thing dead around here is both of their careers what little there was of them to start with. Yes, there is no money to be made off of Jazz 24/7/365 in Kansas City. It won't generate any more capital than those two wannabe's who constantly think they run with the mover and shakers of Kansas City. Tracy has lived in a mediocre neighborhood in Shawnee for ages while fighting with the HOA presidents husband in such a manner you wonder if it was a Greiten style love affair gone bad between the three of them. You have your own two blogs Tracy, how about trashing them up with your verbal nothings that from viewer counts of your blogs plainly say nobody wants to see or cares to see what you say.

    1. Bullshit. I love when she chimes in. She's not hating geezers or railing at the hater of geezers. She's not obsessively commenting on every single post like ^^someone we know. And in response you only have ad hominem attacks.

That's Latin for something. Look it up.

  9. More blacks in charge equals more wasted taxpayer dollars. The only way to make this succeed is put white people in charge.
If they had done that at the very beginning, none of this would've happened, AND EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS.

  10. I have always liked jazz, and have always found myself alone in listening to jazz in KC. My thanks to KKFI and KPR for keeping in alive, long live FM radio.

  12. The way to stop the thing from bleeding red ink is to stop funding it and make it be self supporting or close it.

  13. Jazz has become a small niche market since the 1960's.
Unfortunately, the market has only gotten smaller since that time.
There is not enough interest (and therefore, money) to support an effort like this.

  15. The answer to the headline is "NO". Tracy is 100% correct on this one but the past couple of days she has been a little harsh in her rhetoric. Get a margarita and put on some Jimmy Buffet Tracy, it will be ok.

  16. First question should be, does Mr. Ellis like jazz, no really like jazz?

  17. What's really sad and actually completely amazing about all this is that to find a person more capable of "managing" this mess than the last executive director, all you need to do is to find someone who understands that you can't release $140,000 worth of checks with no money in the account.
At 18th and Vine and KCMO government, this is what is called progress.

  18. So how high is the 6-figure salary thismgjy is going to grift? Who and how much will the kickbacks be to said people that allow him to grift? There should be people, starting with Cleaver, that go to prison over this outright taxpayer theft.

    "The American Jazzbo Museum"?

  22. Ellis is another close friend of Cleaver's. Cleaver had Frank employ his wife at SwopeParkway Health center years ago. Just another front to keep the City money flowing. through the 18th and Vine projects into the hands of other close friends.
