  1. it seems like the concept of antitrust to combat monopolies became unfashionable at some point, maybe thirty years ago.

  2. The merger of TMO and Sprint may lead to more jobs on the side of network, with the update to 5G, but you can be sure that common tasks the companies share (finance & accounting, marketing, etc.) are gonna get hammered. Whether this all nets out to additional jobs is anyone's guess and probably far fetched.

With all that said, who knows what happens to Sprint if they have to continue to go it alone. They have a $hit ton of debt coming due in the next 5-10 years and operating in the industry only continues to cost more with upgrades to networks. I guess it depends what Masa Son decides to do as he essentially owns the company anyway. Don't think he wants to take a big L on Sprint but that debt is an anchor that isn't going away and continues to get more expensive to service through re-structuring. Wireless is zero sum game anymore.

@ 8:58 you're right - to be precise it was thirty-seven years ago. Among the first of Reagan's acts after taking office were Executive Orders that struck down the prohibitions against "Leveraged Buyouts" and weaken the restrictions on the formation of monopolies.

Those were two of the most significant actions that brought on the Great Depress...(sorry)...Recession of 1987!
