In journalism they call stories primarily based on stats "data driven reporting" but in today's Kansas City Star the practice is more akin to the same old story of MSM driving identity politics.

Kansas City Star: Black KC drivers get more tickets than whites. Race is only part of the problem

The Star analyzed traffic tickets from 2017 issued by the Kansas City Police Department and processed by the Kansas City Municipal Court and found significant racial disparities among those ticketed.
Of the traffic tickets given to Kansas City residents, 60 percent went to African-Americans, who make up 30 percent of the population. Thirty-seven percent of tickets went to whites, who make up 59 percent of the population.
Among Kansas City residents, speeding is overwhelmingly the top traffic offense for all races — except African-Americans. The top traffic ticket charge for African-Americans is "state license plate required," followed by "no insurance" and then speeding.

And so because so many lawyers read our blog every day, a kind soul and brilliant legal mind sent us a tip and a key to debunking the Star's faulty thesis and shameful misreporting.

"Apparently, nobody at The Star has knows how traffic court works. Their reporting on this issue doesn't take into account all of the whites who pay a lawyer to PLEAD DOWN their traffic ticket to a non-moving violation. This little trick of the trade is what keeps more than half of the smaller law firms in Kansas City in business and mention of this fact has been buried or eliminated from The Star's report. Please call them out on this TKC, they're 100% misrepresenting these traffic statistics as racial bias. The fact is, there might be some racial disparity but it's mostly because whites in the middle-income brackets are far more likely to pay a lawyer and get their ticket off the books to keep insurance rates down. The fact that they don't really mention this extremely common practice is absolutely repugnant and really makes me distrust them."

At a time when Kansas City is in the midst of a horrific murder crisis, the Kansas City Star is peddling a report that propagates distrust in the police without doing as much as a basic fact check on real world practices and street level reality.
Again, they say this is "data driven reporting" but it looks a lot more like propaganda to an increasing number of readers who are now openly questioning the quality of journalism from Kansas City's largest daily paper and have graciously reached out to our AWESOME TKC BLOG community in order to set the record straight.

First of all, while many Star employees may have lived in JoCo at one time, I doubt that many of the few who remain live over there. Their paychecks (it IS a failing company, remember) can no longer support the JoCo lifestyle, except for those who have been there for eons and have paid off their houses. But we know that means older Star employees, and we know most of them have been purged.

What percentage of moving-violation tickets get reduced through hiring lawyers? Unless you know that, you don't know shit, and you can't draw any conclusions about the effect of lawyers on the statistics.

Here's what you need to know...License your vehicle, purchase insurance for said vehicle (as required by freaking state law), pay your damn tickets, and obey the laws, not just the ones you want to, but ALL of them. This is what most of us do, even if it means we have to give certain things up such as not eating out, going to the movies, getting tatoos,etc. This article/issue has nothing to do with race, it has everything to do with trying to MAKE it about race. Read the article, the person they focused on has received SEVENTEEN TRAFFIC TICKETS SO FAR IN 2018, with the majority of them being for driving on a suspended Driver's License and driving vehicle with Expired Plates! Only four of them were "Speeding" tickets!
