Union: Harley-Davidson will ship work to Thailand from closing U.S. plant

Deets:

Harley has said it will close the Kansas City factory despite pleas from some members of Congress to keep it open and retain about 800 jobs. Harley says it’s moving the Kansas City work to the company’s plant in York, Pa., creating about 400 additional jobs in York.

But in a meeting Wednesday with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., members of the Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers said at least some of the work was headed to Thailand.

“Part of my job is being moved to York, but the other part is going to Bangkok,” said Richard Pence, a machinist at the Kansas City plant.

  2. Donald Trump promised that US jobs would no longer be sent over seas. He lied. So. Much. Winning.

  3. Obama's still the only President to have told the "lie of the year," selected for its blatant disregard of the truth. He actually told so many that the rest of his lies all tied for second place. Trump has a long long way to go to catch up to the Obama Spin Machine.

  7. You mean the machinists Union that bemoaned Trump being elected in the first place? Yeah, some of the members were probably Trump voters, but I'd say most are simply dem sycophants that vote as their union bosses tell them. However, politics aside, this writing has been on the wall for a LONG time. The explosion of riding in the early 2000's saw a lot of newcomers from Euro and bog cruisers from well known jap brands, as well as resurgence of old (nostalgic) American brands. All of these entrants were putting out bikes with big looks, big power and modern tech that Harley simply never had; all at an equivalent or (mostly) lesser cost. You simply can't compete with that. Harley's management is a bloated bureaucracy from years of stagnant operations; and once the hog has been fed, it doesn't want to trim any weight. Dealership agreements are outdated. It all leads to an overpriced product that under delivers. Not to mention ownership issues but that's outside of my bailiwick.

It sucks the plant is closing. It sucks that 800 families are trying to figure out what to do. It sucks the employees have work experience that doesn't readily lend itself to other industries. It sucks that those employees, who have been handsomely paid for the hours they worked, will likely have to go into non-union industry and find out how they rest of us live. The whole thing sucks, but it ain't due to politics on one side or the other. It sucks 'cause that's the nature of the beast, something I live in "fear" of as I know my work can all come crumbling down in the blink of an eye.

  9. Last year, Trump was shooting his mouth off again about how he would open markets for this great American company. All he does is talk, talk, talk. He's done nothing to help.
    ------

President Donald Trump called out Harley-Davidson Inc. in his first speech to a joint session of Congress Tuesday, saying Milwaukee motorcycle executives told him it was "very hard to do business with other countries because they tax our goods at such a high rate."

Trump recently met with Harley-Davidson (NYSE: HOG) CEO Matt Levatich and other executives at the White House after sources told national media outlets that Trump decided to cancel a trip to visit a Harley-Davidson facility in Milwaukee because company officials were worried about possible protests.

“I just met with officials and workers from a great American company, Harley-Davidson. In fact, they proudly displayed five of their magnificent motorcycles, made in the USA, on the front lawn of the White House,” Trump said Tuesday.

Trump related what he said the company’s executives had told him about global tax rates.

"At our meeting, I asked them, how are you doing, how is business? They said that it's good," he said. "I asked them further how they are doing with other countries, mainly international sales. They told me — without even complaining because they have been mistreated for so long that they have become used to it — that it is very hard to do business with other countries because they tax our goods at such a high rate.

"They said that in one case another country taxed their motorcycles at 100 percent. They weren't even asking for change. But I am.

  10. Goodbye Harley, this is the beginning of the end. You have enjoyed brand loyalty because you were American like few other American companies. You're riders were fiercely loyal but kiss that goodbye and deservedly so.
