Kansas City Activists Declare War On Landlords With Upcoming Vote

In far too kind terms, there's Dead-Tree Media "journalism" advocating the destruction of local property rights and a move that's tantamount to free rent for anybody with political connections.

Moreover . . .

MAKE NO MISTAKE: THIS VOTE MAKES OWNING INNER-CITY PROPERTY EVEN MORE UNPROFITABLE!!!

The irony here is that activist and "community organizers" hope this effort will help secure better urban core housing. Sadly, a completely lack of any biz experience doesn't give them any insight to understand market forces and the inevitability that this will further erode housing stock outside of government-owned shanty towns.

Take a look:

KC rental housing inspection proposal to go on August ballot

A proposed "Healthy Homes" program requiring city inspection of rental housing will be on the Aug. 7 ballot under City Council action taken Thursday. The council was required by law to approve placement on the ballot after housing activists collected more than the required 1,708 valid signatures.

  1. So. Since 90% of the rental properties in KC are in compliance. All landlords have to pay to have 10% brought up to standards. First, don't we already have codes in place to correct this problem. Second, this cost is going to be passed on to the renters. Third, this will become another city council slush fund that will require an increase in fees every few years.

  2. In the end this will be good for the renters. Not all will like it but as always it the few who don't do right that forces the others to have to suffer added costs and labor to deal with it.

  3. Are the Black Churches exempt?
They're the worst problems in this area and the largest group of slum landlords in KC.

  4. Just like any other government backed initiative. It punishes the law abiding and does little to the law breakers. The law abiding will have take the brunt of this initiative.
Start focusing on the lawbreakers and not the law abiding.
    Where is the outrage?

  6. If I were a renter, I would welcome an inspection before signing a lease. This would prevent those sad stories from folks who have no water, electricity or heat. Do the right thing.
