Kansas regulators threw the switch on a merger of Great Plains Energy Inc. and Westar Energy Inc. on Thursday. The Kansas Corporation Commission approved a combination of the utility companies Thursday afternoon. The Missouri Public Service Commission gave its approval earlier in the day.
